How much should I give?
Hi
As a follow on from my post of yesterday and after talking with my health nurse and doctor regarding my ongoing anxiety regarding how much milk my little one is taking (and his weight gains) I'm going to give two of his feeds by bottle with the rest as breast feeds. I am aware that there are dangers in doing this that he may find the bottle easier and then reject the breast altogether but believe that right now this is the best course of action to the two of us to take. I am also aware that my fears may be irrational but right now they are real to me. At the end of the day the breastfeeding has got to be enjoyable experience for us both and my son will only benefit more from have a less anxious mother. This way if it works we may get the best of both worlds - some peace of mind for me and the majority of his feeds to be breast for him.
I am intending to continue to try to give him six feeds a day so two will be bottle and the rest BF. My intention is to replace one of the afternoon feeds and his last feed at night with the bottle. Where possible (night time will always be okay) I am going to express after the "missed" feed. This should mean that only one feed will be formula (day feed) with maybe a little bit of formula in the night feed (will depend on how much I have expressed).
Sorry if that has been a bit long winded. My question is how much should I give him for these two feeds. Do i go by the amount on the side of the tin or by his weight (ie multiply weight by 150 and divide by number of feeds). The side of the tin mls assumes 5 feeds per day i am hoping to do 6. He is 3.5 months old.
Hope it all makes sense and appreciate the advice.
Cheers

He needs 750-1000ml of BM a day.
My suggestion would be to give him 100ml and then a bf - or a bf followed by as much as he will take from a bottle. That way you don't have to express, and you can give him the extra calories that you are concerned about.
