Getting rid of the dummy - positive/negative stories and pressie ideas pleeease!!!

Hi all,

My DD1 has just turned two on Thursday and it was always my plan to get rid of her dummy now. So Sunday is D-Day. She's going to bed and I'm going to explain to her that because she's big girl now, the dummy fairy is going to come and take her dummy away and leave her a present because she's such a big girl and doesn't need her dummy anymore. Then the next day, all dummies will be gone and they will not return. Now I want to ask two things.
1. what present should the dummy fairy bring?? Any ideas??
2. Can you please give me some of your experiences? Positive or negative I don't care. I just want to be prepared.

This was how I planned to get rid of DDs but things changed.
Could you maybe take her shopping and she can pick out a doll or something like that that she can take to bed ONLY. then when the fairy comes, maybe leave something for her doll???

Sunshine - thanks for the suggestion. She already has a teddy blanket that she sleeps with.....maybe I get teddy a pressie......but what? hmmmmm........thinking, thinking......what changed with your DD and the dummy, is it because of your new baby?

We took aricyn's away with great success - I actually started up a thread about it. He was great, and is even ok with the baby having a dummy.

We did the dummy fairy story - and they left him a dinosaur :) It was a big hit.

And then we went and brought him another toy because we were "proud" of him being such a nice boy to let the dummy fairy keep his dummies :D

It worked like a charm! He had two or three days asking for it and then he seemed to forget about it.

He still has moments (but they are rare) where he will ask for it, and we'll be like - huh? the dummy fairy has it remember? and he is like "oooh yeah..".. and then keeps playing :D

Thanks Mel. I think I read your thread actually. It's so nice to hear of positive stories. I'm definite about it happening but just want to soften the blow as she's so attached to it.

We are going to be trying to get rid of DS2's dummy soon but don't want to stir the pot just yet because of the new arrival.

My question is that DS2 calls out for the dummy in the middle of the night when he can't find it. How did those of you who got rid of the dummy deal with that? Just go in an resettle. He only has it for sleeps so I don't want to upset him too much.

Nik - I didn't think he would be so easy to give it up - it was like his best friend!!! We were very surprised at how well he adapted to not having it.

Spring - he used to wake up in the middle of the night, and yup, we just resettled. But it was pretty easy because he sleeps between us :rolleyes:

My DD only got rid of hers recently at age 3.5!! ::O:, but we used the dummy fairy line too. I hadn't pushed it earlier as she's a bit fragile and she was taking her time getting used to DS.

I got her a little gift bag and we collected all the dummies from around the house (there were lots she took em everywhere) and put it out for the fairy to take to the sick babies in hospital becasue they needed them more than DD.
We had talked about it a few days prior so she knew what would happen. I suggested that the fairy 'might' leave her a gift to say thanks, and she said she thought the fairy might leave her a turtle! Great says Mum....aggghh! Where was I going to get one of those. Thank goodness for the littlest petshop...so she got her turtle.
Then a couple of nights later I left her another present and a little note that said thanks from the sick babies - cos she really had done well - she was obsessive with them.

We left ours out for Santa on Christmas Eve because he needed to give them to all the little babies who didn't have any. In return Santa left him some presents under the tree. We talked about if for 2 months prior, and told everyone we knew.

Sooooooooo we are now dummy free!!!!!!! Thanks to all of you. You reinforced my confidence that we could do it. Had a bit of a crying episode when going to bed Sunday night after she gave up her dummy to leave out for the fairy and one the next morning too but Monday night she looked at me at bedtime and said no dummy and shrugged her shoulders. Lol! She no longer asks for it and goes down to sleep both day and night without too much of a fuss only four days after giving it away. I'm so relieved and so happy! Thank you again everyone xx

I think we imagine in our own minds that its going to be harder than it actually is!! I guess when kids are obsessive about somethin (like a dummy) it goes from their mind pretty quickly.. LOL Pretty adaptable little buggers huh.

My DD2 and DD3 have just gotten rid of thier dummies.

DD2 'lost' hers and she was happy with that, never asked for it: but I found she didn't settle as quickly at sleep time. Good News: Under control now though!

DD3 was chewing the ends off her dummies and when we went to buy a new pkt they only had the brown latex teats instead of the silicone ones she was used too. Bought them any way, and since then she has FLAT OUT REFUSED to have a dummy: Too easy!!

It was mainly your woohoo thread that got me thru arimeh. You're so right. And I felt awful taking something she liked away from her when she hadn't been naughty! It was definitely all in my head but once I'd made the decision that was it. I was prepared for a horrible week :D

nik we taped her thumb with sports tape!! not nice to suck then and she couldnt remove it, the nail biting stuff didnt work so this was our only option
