Chromosome abnormailities in men

My DH and i have been TTC for almost three years and i have had 3 miscarraiges. We have recently found out that my husband has some chromosome abnormailities (probably heridetry) and only 2% of his sperm is normal. We are shortly off to see a genetic endocrinologist before starting IVF. We have just found out that i am pregnant again ( currently 5wks, ironic considering we had stopped trying), my fertility specialist is certain i will miscarry again. I was wondering if anyone has the same problems and could share there stories or ideas.

Have you looked into IVF with PGD at all? There is a thread about it here:

PGD tests the embryo for certain chromosomal abnormalities before it is transferred, maybe this might be suitable for you and your DH? But hoping you have a sticky bub on board of course ;)

Your situation reminds me of our situation just a few months ago! Our world came crashing down when we found out about my DH's chromosome abnormality...now 4 months on and we feel alot stronger and have learnt to accept our situation.

I am so sorry that you're going through such a difficult time. All I can say is that hang in there and things will get better. My DH was diagonosed with chromosome abnormality last year in Oct and I was also 5 weeks pregnant then! I was also told that I will miscarry and sadly I did at 8 weeks. I really really hope and pray that yours is a different outcome. We were told that even if the pregnancy continues the chances of the baby having severe abnormalities were high so in a way it was better that we miscarried. It was the most difficult and painful experience I've had to ever go through. I really really hope that things work out for you and by some miracle everything goes fine for you.

We have been TTC for 2 years now and have had 3 miscarriages and 2 chemical pregnancies. After finding out about the abnormality, the doctor had given us 2 options to have children and that were to either go for adoption or donor sperm. We looked into adoption and decided that it would take too long and its a very very lengthy and difficult process. I was not at all keen on donor sperm but over time have come to accept that this is the only option for us and we are now going down the donor path. DH and I after a lot of thought, counselling and discussions feel pretty comfortable with the idea and are now on the waiting list for donor sperm.

We've had tests that show all is good in terms of motility, what they look like, volume and something else... How do we know if there is an issue with chromosomal or genetic damage?

When my husband had his sperm checked it came back that they were slighlty slower, the quantity was on the higher side, however they were not a good shape, what they looked like was not right. I hope this helps. It sounds like you have nothing to worry about. Our Obgyn checked chromosome abnormalities in this initial testing, so you might like to ask him if that was done, good luck!!

A girlfriend of mine's husband has a genetic abnormality and they conceived on their first try using IVF/PGD. Unfortunately they have had a number of further cycles which have only resulted in one "normal" embryo which didn't implant. It's a numbers game.

I suggest you find out using karyotyping exactly what your DH/DP's genetic issue is, and that will assist you in determining the avenue of treatment/options available to you.
