Any idea who to contact to find out if a particular vitamin (chromium) is safe to take whilst b/feeding? I am hoping I don't need a visit to a GP to find out!

Look up chronium and it will tell you that the body needs very little and excessive amounts can be very dangerous so I would not take the chance. What are you using it for? If for cravings, then I would try other methods rather.
Just did a google search and they say no, definately not safe to BF.
I did a google search also but really wanted to find out from a reputable source (not saying they all arent on google) to check a few others too from a professional in the area. I know Barb has posted another time of someone to contact with these type of qus. Thanks
Check this jounal link out - includes an article on medication & breastfeeding, with contact number for info
I think also the monash drug info service can advise on these things... not sure. I've actually been searching for that number that Barb gives out too..
Thanks for that Marcellus. I don't get this bit (from the journal article):
For the vast majority of maternal medications,
the amount of medication an infant
would receive through breastfeeding is less
than 1% of an infant dose
Any idea? How would they know what the infant dose is (a percentage of the adult?) and wouldn't it depend on individual medicines?
I called the medicines Info line and they were semi-helpful! Says not much research in the area!
Maybe it's just so small they know it'd be less than 1% at most...?
I know alcoholic content in milk is same as blood. So blood alcohol 0.05 = milk alcoholic content of 0.05%.
maybe someone who knows the right number to call will see this thread...
The obstetric medicine helpline people tend to have the best info that there is. So you won't get anything better from your GP.
Can you get your chromium from food instead?
Food Standards Agency - Eat well, be well - Chromium?
For most medicines there IS an infant dose - i.e. the dose you would give to an unfortunate baby who needs the medicine. And it probably evaluated by trial and error on babies who would be very sad without the medicine so the potential risk is necessary.
Barb tends to recommend Rodney White at Monash Med Centre, which is one of the obstetric medicine helplines - 03 9594 2361
Here is a sticky on obtaining info on medication and bfing:

I would recommend contacting Dr Rodney Whyte at Monash as well for the most accurate info. Unfortunately, most GPs and obs take a 'cover your backside' approach when it comes to advising on medications, rather than provide specific advice on individual medications and supplements. I have known of bfing mothers told definitely not to take a certain medication by a specialist and then been reassured that it's okay by another more up-to-date health professional (or Dr Whyte).
