I've been browsing Spotlight for various fabrics but they just never seem to have anything that stands out to me that I'd want to use. I couldn't even find any minky or nice fleece that I liked. Are there places other than Spotlight where I could buy fabric from? Any good online fabric shops?
Do you usually shop for fabric and then decide what to make with it or do you have a pattern in mind first and then go shopping for the fabric?
I brought some from funkyfabrix the other day - they have gorgeous retro and oriental themed fabrics and I also got some from ijustlovethatfabric. All that I brought specifically for something, but I will buy fat quarters if I see some really nice prints and keep them for a rainy day.
There is a great place in Melbourne (near Lygon St) if you are in Melb. DK Fabrics.
Different Spotlight stores have different ranges. I have two within reach of this place, one is completely useless, and the other one takes my breath away every time.
I also buy fabrics from a bridal store in Hawthorn, they have a big remnants bin where everything is sold at 75% off. I've made quite a few things from that.
Sometimes I buy the pattern first, fabric second, but it's usually the other way round, because I pick up fabric at garage sales, op shops reverse garbage etc, then go and think aboout what I can do with it. I also draft a lot of patterns myself, usually after a fabric scavenge.
I have more project ideas than I could ever complete in my lifetime.
Just subscribing for when I finally get crafty!
Snugglybean I am the same...I have so much fabric stashed away, some I have ideas about what I want to do, but I'll probably be 90 years old and still have them sitting around as they are now..lol.
I have bought a little bit off ebay, but mostly from Spotlight. Ours had a sale for a while on quilting/patchwork fabrics where some of the rolls were discounted to less than $5/metre so I stocked up then (and probably spent way more money than I should have!). I rarely have a pattern then go looking for fabric...I usually see a fabric I really like and wonder what I can do with it..even if i don't know, if I really love it I'll get a couple of metres of it.
Is there an "I'm addicted to buying material I love but will probably never use" club?? :lol:
These all have the most gorgeous fabrics, but they aren't cheap, so i am warning you ;)

equilter is an awesome online store..the exchange rate rocks at the moment making it cheaper to get stunning fabrics from the US cheaper than you can get them here!
also try etsy for people selling beautiful unique fabrics on there

MG, I'm in Perth. Had a look for DK Fabrics online but couldn't find a site for them, not to worry.
Snugglybean, I've noticed that too with my two closest Spotlights. One has an average range of materials, the other has a really big range but nothing has really caught my eye yet.

Try Spotlight Innaloo - I could spend a million dollars in there! When I was there a couple of weeks back they had this gorgeous shot silk for sale.........
Eluned- there is a shop in Morley behind the Galleria that is called Quintessential Quilts and they stock fabric for quilting (100% cotton, 112cm width I think) but could be used for anything. I just loved every bit of fabric they had in there! I bought a few fat quarters ($6 each) and heaps of 20x20cm pieces for a craft project I am doing for DD's room. I am not a quilter (in fact, I can't use my sewing machine) but was worth a trip for me to see gorgeous fabrics.

I got cow print cotton off Ebay when I was PG. what on earth I will do with it, I have no idea...but I liked it :lol:
I buy alot form ebay in the US. I know postage is a bit $$ but you can ususally get 6 yards into a $13.45 postage envelope so be prepared to buy up ;)
I buy minkee form Melbel...Spotlight doesnt really have minkee as such. I also buy directly from minkee delight again because the $$ is so good atm.
LIcraft also has alot of different prints that spotlight doesnt. Their fleece is very different to spotlights aswell AND check out bargain box fabric. They seem to be stocking alot of Micheal miller fabric CHEAP lately :)
Melbel- you're in trouble! I got onto equilter last night and OMG I have never seen such a range of fabric! I am still trying to complete the order- there are just so many to choose from. Thanks for the tip!

well im on equilter now an man am i going to be in trouble with DH come pay day lol ssooo much beautiful fabric! Im redoing our whole bedroom doona covers, pillow cases, cushions, curtians and hoping to make it all myself so this site is fantastic!
