What age can you use a potty from? Good brand for little one?

I am just wondering what age you can sit a child on a potty, I normally know when DD is going to do a poo as she makes a noise although doesn't appear to be straining (often is during nappy free time) so was wondering what age I could sit her on a potty to do it (would mean less cleaning up!). She sits up very well but I haven't a clue as to whether she would just fall into a potty at her age (8 months but is about 9.5kg). My mum says that she would always hold us over the toilet or potty when we were little if she knew we were going - but seems to hurt my back holding her.

I saw one the other day at Target that looked AWESOME!
Its very simple, but with a tray you can click on.
So if you know what time your bub goes to the loo, put them on, & click the tray on.
You could put them infront of the TV to keep them occupied, to avoid them getting cranky at having to sit down to do their business, iykwim.

i think they were 40 bucks, but were on sale.

u can get potties all different sizes from small to almost the size of a toilet

good luck i wish i knew when Jamie was doing his poo lol he used to strain not anymore lol

Vic - this might be the one TellyTubby is referring to - its $24 - normally $30, but tomorrow is the last day of the special - this might keep CJ on the potty (the little table) until she's done her business :)

Roger Armstrong make a good one that is suitable for smaller bubs. They are about $7, very simple (so easy to clean up!) and also made in Australia. DS was able to sit on it fine as soon as he could sit unassissted, but we always just sat on the floor behind him just in case.

You can get them from Target and Big W :)

Wow just looked at the link and roger armstrong website I didn't realise there was such a range of potty's about. At target there even seemed to be some sort of royal throne potty!
( Although thinking about it I remember my brother having one that played raindrops keep falling on my head) I think we will just try the straightforward 7 dollar one.

I think some of them are a bit overboard IMO! I just think of the wee and poo getting wedged in those little crevices eewww ;) LOL @ Raindrops

DD used the Fisher Price one with all the bells and whistles since 18 months old. She just got used to sitting on it and 'flushing' it ect then started actually weeing in it after a few months.

When she turned 3 and was out of pull-ups I bought a plastic ring with steps that folds out from toys r us. Its important that they can put their feet flat on the floor or step/stool so tey feel confident they arent going to fall off or into the toilet.

Ohmigod! I have been looking for a potty with a click on tray for ages!!
Its what my Mum had for the 4 of us years ago - and she reckoned there was no 'training' involved - just stuck us on the potty secured with the tray for 20mins after every meal- with some food/toys/playschool etc to keep us occupied. We were apparently so used to going on the potty from a young age (as soon as we could sit up on our own) that we just refused to wee or poo in a nappy and used to crawl to the potty after eating!!

We have the really cheap potty from K-mart, sorry can't remeber the brand. We had in the bathroom from when our DD was around 10 months. She just used it as a seat for awhile, and she would occasionally do a wee on it, when it was nappy free time. We never made her sit on it. She has just potty trained herself and she is 2 1/2. Because she knew all about the potty and was comfortable with it, she just said to me one day "no more nappies".

Having the simple, small one is also really good when you have to take it with you to places later on...

just go the EC websites, you'll find heaps of useful ideas. i'd put the urls if allowed.

my very short child, didn't feel safe on quite a few potties i tried with her, until i got the BOON potty. lower to the ground, much wider (so very stable).
as soon as we found the potty she felt safe using, she was trained in three days!
if i had realised that earlier, i would have gotten her that one from the start! but it took me ages (with a pre-verbal child) to work out
1. she wasn't wanting to use the potties cos she didn't feel safe with them
and
2. what exactly she didn't feel safe about

after the three days, she wanted to use the normal toilet with an insert, and so the BOON got put in the car boot for going out potty visits. The stability came in handy in a car boot, no way it could tip over.

the boon was the most exxy potty i bought, but it gave the best result (for my child).

i didn't try at the age your child is (8 months) as i damaged my back and stomach muscles so badly during the c-section. So i knew any non-essential lifting was out for me.

The Roger Armstrong potty chair with tray, sounds like a good idea (design wise) to save your back, but i found the potty "hole" too big, for my 27month old child, she slipped down in that one, so didn't suit her. I have no idea of the size of your 8 month old, but my first thought was, might it be too big to hold an 8 month old up? If buying that one, i'd put the child physically IN it, in the shop, to find out if they can indeed sit up SUPPORTED in it, without slipping down. (plus look at the size (diameter) of the actual potty part).

i think there is such a wide range of ages and sizes, at which children potty train, so potties come in a range of sizes.

the potties that people who EC their young bubs, use, look more like bowls, to me.

I didn't EC my child, but i used some of the many hints on EC sites, to help my pre-verbal, small DD toilet train (at 27 months).

Jellybean - yep i've heard good things about them too (from a mum who's kids are now all grown up).
ANd she said the same thing - they're just great.

If DD was still toilet training i'd get one. but lucky me - she's been fully TTed since 19 months!

actually i should probably get one anyway, for when DS is ready. hmm

I put DD and DS on the potty when they were 7-8 months old as soon as they were on solids i would sit them there nad feed them and they got used to eating and pooping like they normally would in a nappy.
DD is now 1.5 and goes on teh toilet most of them time has taken 2 week so very easy.

I got a potty toilet from K-Mart no idea the brand it comes in white or blue, but has a tray on teh front so they sit there you can put snacks on the tray and they can sit there watch tv etc and eat and poop or pee.. very very very simple.. and not much effort!!!

Less nappies less $$ SPENT!

EC is elimination communication. Take a look at tribal baby - it's an interesting read. We've been doing it with DS since he was about 6 weeks old, it's really rewarding :)
