One or two sleeps? Am I mean??

When do babies usually go from 2 to 1 day sleeps??

One day last week DD only had 1 day sleep, she just wouldn't have an arvo nap, I think bc we had visitors and she didn't want to miss out, lol. She woke from her morning nap at 11am and didn't go to be until 7.30pm. She was doing fine, didn't look tired. If she's really tired she'll usually fall asleep during a feed and she didn't. Anyway, that night she had a stretch of 7 hrs straight sleep!!!!!!! She woke for a feed and then slept for a few more hrs. Usually she's up AT LEAST 3 times a night!!

She never self settles and I rock her or feed her to sleep in the day. I usually give her a sleep when she's been up 3-3.5hrs. Is it mean to only give her 1 sleep a day so I can get more sleep at night?? Assuming it wasn't a once off and it was caused by only having 1 day sleep. If I don't put her to sleep in the day she just will not sleep, so I control how many sleeps she has.

Hmm... I'm not sure. If she was obviously tired I wouldn't be making her stay awake of course, lol. But she can stay up for ages now and never really looks tired.

Hun. only you can really know if your bub needs 1 or 2 sleeps. If she's not tired or being grizzly or behaving in anyway that suggests she needs more sleep, then maybe she is ready just to have one sleep. You're not mean! You know that if your DD was tired and in need of an afternoon sleep, you'd put her down. Easy. Follow your baby hun, you'll soon work out if it was a one-off or the start of more sleep for you! :)

For what it's worth, my 10 month old still has 3 sleeps a day, sometimes 4 on a tired day, and sleeps a solid 8 hours from bedtime, so it just goes to show that like all of us, babies are individual and have their own sleep needs.

It was around 10 odd months (I think) that DS1 went to one sleep. He generally goes down around noon, and can sleep for a 1-3 hrs. It took a while for him to settle into the one day sleep, but he was so much better after this step. I followed his lead, if he was tired in the morning, I would let him sleep, but I would let him sit with his bottle on the lounge and watch playschool or something, and if he looked like drifting, he would have two sleeps that day, but after a while it stopped happening, and we got to the one. Oh, he was also at family day care a few days, and most of the other kids were sleeping one only, so that might have pushed us a bit too...

I think you will know when dd is ready to sleep, and you will follow that lead. I hated giving up that morning sleep, but got used to it too. Good luck hun. xo

I've sometimes wondered if reducing DS's day sleeps would result in more sleep at night too. He's still having 3 naps a day ( 1.5hr, 1.5 hr and 45mins) and wakes 3 hourly during the night for feeds. A couple of times he's missed a nap due to us being out or having people over, and it never seems to change anything at night.

Oh, and I've heard the saying that "sleep breeds sleep". ie, that the better they sleep during the day, the better they will sleep at night. But having said that, I'm sure all babies are different, and what works for one may not work for another.

11.00am to 7.30pm! Thats impressive! If she can do it, you're not mean. I have been wondering if its nearly time for 1 sleep for DS too. If DS has a good morning nap I can't get him back down for 4.5 hours which brings us often too close to dinner and bath time.. However, he can still only stay up 2.5 to 3 hours in the mornings!!

I think 'generally' babies start moving to one sleep a day at about 12 months, however if your baby is awake and happy to stay awake, I wouldn think there was any need to put them to bed just as others have said, just follow what your little one wants to do. My bubba has two sleeps a day at almost ten months and if she was waking up every three hours at night, I wouldn't be too worried about making changes during the day that upset that routine :)

I think my DD dropped her morning nap at around 15-16 mths. But every baby is different, and as long as she is getting enough sleep overall (night and nap), then I don't think it matters how many naps there are. I think 12-15 hours is the recommended amount at her age, but you could check on that one (and BTW, if it is, that's still a difference of 3 hrs, some babies may need the extra nap because they need closer to 15 hrs a day, whereas some don't, if that makes sense!).

Every bub is different, so follow her lead and your instincts.

My girls started to drop down to 1 sleep from 10 months. By 12 months both were only having one long sleep through the day.

If bub still needs 2 per day you'll know it because she'll be really cranky if she misses a sleep or if she is ready to drop down to 1 sleep you'll find she may not go down easily at night or the midday sleep starts go longer than normal.

She had one sleep again yesterday to test out my theory, and she slept for a 5 hr stretch last night and longer in total (11 hrs instead of around 9.5). So looks like if I only give her one sleep she will make up for it at night anyway. She stayed up longer in the morning and I gave her a sleep at 11 and she slept for 2 hrs (instead of the usual 45 mins - 1.5hrs). She was fine with it, she went to bed earlier and got more sleep. So looks like it's not bad for her, phew! Today she's needed 2 sleeps though. Maybe she'll just have one sleep a day a couple of times a week from now on and eventually it will get more frequent??

I am excited at the prospect of more sleep for me anyway when she does finally go to one sleep a day! LOL.

i'm having the same questions at the moment!

ollie usually has two 1 hour sleeps during the day, but didn't go down until 8-9-10pm.. and it was getting really hard for me. (times like that i wish i could say, 'hey, your turn!')
but he started daycare and would only sleep once there, and i noticed that if i made tea early (about 5.30) he'd have tea, have a bath, some tucker then sleep! it was awesome! it didn't help him sleep better through the night though, i think it's something he'll learn gradually.

thing is now, implementing it at home without the distractions of daycare is harder. he'll usually have a sleep around 11 for and hour/hour and a half but starts getting tired again around 4/5 o clock.. so it's a question of letting him sleep then, then having him awake til 10 or not let him sleep until 6/6.30.. i try go with the second, for both out sanities! he ends up with more sleep that way.
recently though, i've been letting him have a mini nap (15 or so minutes) at about 4.. it means he doesn't go to sleep until 7/7.30 but he's happier, so i might stick with that unitl he's ready to go to one sleep entirely.

i do feel kinda bad for 'forcing' him not to sleep.. but in the end it's better..

so i don't know if that's helpful ar all but go with what you feel is best for you and your situation (and sanity) i guess :D
