Toilet training..... need some advice

...... ok so Oskar will be 3 in March and does wees in the toilet and has been fine with this for quite a while now, but not poos - these are in the nappy. Over the past couple of weeks though, he's decided more and more that he wants to wear undies during the day, in fact it's every day now really. He doesn't have accidents. One day he did do a little poo (about 2 wks ago?) in his undies and I cleaned it out for him and just reminded him he had undies on and that if he wanted to do poos it was in the toilet or nappy.

So, he used to do 2 or 3 poos a day but now he'll go a day or 2 without doing one because it seems he doesn't want to do them in the toilet BUT he doesn't really want to do them in his nappy either! He did one poo in the toilet about a week or week and a half ago but won't do it again. Have tried offering chocolate if he does one and even have a special present for him which he knows about for when he does a poo in the toilet.

What do I do?? He will tell me he has a sore tummy or a sore bottom and he knows he needs to poo but he's holding it in. He's not constipated. I'll ask him if he wants to go and do poos on the toilet and he says no, do you want a nappy on, no.... then eventually he will say yes to the nappy (this may be a day later though) and do a poo almost immediately! What other suggestions are there? I do worry that he's not pooing enough as he used to be so regular and now he's making his tummy and bottom sore by not going!

My 2 eldest were still pooing in a nappy at 3.5yrs.. I used to get anxious that they would never go in the toilet.. In the end I told them they needed to poop everyday or they would get a sore tummy and that they needed to ask for a nappy.. when they asked for a nappy I would say lets try sitting on the toilet for a little while and if nothing happens we will pop a nappy on

Another thing I did was empty the poo into the toilet and get them to laugh at the splash it made.. then we would giggle about how funny it looked in the toilet ect.. Eventually they got there

My ds was exactly the same, poo only happened in a nappy.

In the end I resorted to good ole bribery!!! We had a trip to the toy shop where he got to choose a 'big boy' toy, this toy then came home and went straight up onto the fridge where he could see it. We had a chat about how that was his special toy for when he did poos in the toilet. I think it only took a few days of looking longingly at the fridge for the toilet to happen.

Oh, and if he refused later on to poo on the toilet and wanted a nappy the toy went back onto the fridge until the next toilet poo.

This was prob the wrong thing to do but it worked for us!

another idea is to get him to sit on the potty wearing a nappy when he wants to do a poo. this gets him used to the positioning of the potty, whilst still feeling safe in his nappy. A second step can then be to cut a hole in the nappy (if using disposables) so the poop falls into the potty.

noooooooo don't tell me 3 1/2 lol. He did ask for a nappy tonight after he ran to me saying his bottom was sore. I asked him if he wanted to do poos in the toilet, but no I want my nappy. Then he said, I'm just going to hide lol... IN MY ROOM not his... lol. I asked if he wanted to "hide" in the toilet, that I could close the door for him if he wanted. Nup, nappy it was.

Sharon, we have a new toy waiting for that poo to happen! He got one for his first poo in the toilet and we have another one sitting and waiting. I would consider putting it on the fridge, however, of late he's decided he can and WILL climb everything and anything. So, it's away safe but we remind him of it and he even said to me tonight that if he does poos in toilet he can have the truck. I will see though if I can find somewhere I can put it in sight.... maybe a photo of it.. hmmm.

Kate, I will try that idea on him... didn't think of that one.

So it all continues.... IN THE NAPPY lol.

aussienc, tried the poo from nappy into the toilet and nope hasn't had any effect doh! I was all like oh that was a funny noise etc but nah he didn't care.

Sharon, that hasn't persuaded him... he still hasn't got his new toy and I actually asked him for his other one back and he just toddled off and got it and gave it to me lol. Bah thought it'd possibly work.

Kate, suggested it and he sat on the toilet once but won't again.

He went 3 days up until last night when we were out for dinner and he had a nappy on... I'm glad DH was there cos it was rank by then lol. Blurgh! So, we continue to try to suggest different things and ALWAYS let him know that he needs to do a poo when he comes telling us his bottom is sore. Hopefully he'll watch kids at daycare and decide he can do it again.
