Achy lower back pain???
Hello girls,
I have a question - Did/do any of you girls experience/experiencing lower back pain during early pregnancy? I'm 5 weeks pregnant today and have kind of like an achy pressure type pain?? :wall: I kind of feel it when I have sat down for long periods of time and when I move around a little it goes away, but after a while it's back. I have always had a bit of a bad back - have postural problems, but it's been good for a long time until now...
It's worrying me a little... I guess I'm wanting to find out whether this is normal or whether this could mean problems because with my m/c I had really bad lower back pain for a few days before the m/c too.......:o
I really hope and pray this is a sticky bubby
Also, this may sound silly, but can I apply a heat pack to my lower back? I know they say you shouldn't apply a heat pack to your pelvis during pregnancy, but what about your back?
Any advice/help/tips would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks! :)

Hi there,
I really cannot comment as I have had no back pain at all through 4 pregnancies and labours. I just thought that I would answer as no one else has yet!
I can understand why you are concerned, having just recently experienced a m/c with similar symptoms. All I can suggest is to see your GP or OB/GYN and ask all the questions, everybody experiences different things throughout pregnancy as I am sure you are already aware!
Best be to go to your doc and you will feel much more relieved with an expert answer/opinion
All the best

With all my pregnancies I had an achey lower back and pelvis for the first 3 months. It is very unsettling but a normal part of pregnancy for many women.
Of course it goes without saying if the achiness turns to pain or you have any bleeding then go and see your GP
Congratulations and enjoy your pregnancy

Hi hun,
Reasons I have come across lower back pain in early pregnancy are
~ body beginning its adjustments (muscles and ligaments)
~ wind pain and
~ beleive it or not, constipation. Sometimes when I get it I take a dose of Metamucil (hugs Metamucil bottle) and within an hr or so I am right as rain!
I found my 1st pregnancy the worst for aches and pains as everything is not only new to you and DH but to your body also.
With DS#2 I flew / bounced through the pregnancy as everything just kinds knew what to do.
This time round I feel even less which I think is why I wonder if I am at all utd! lol
According to my book BIRTH (which I highy recommend) in the Chapter 2
"Aches & pains: mild cramps, bloating, tugging and pulling and prehaps slight backache is common as the uterus starts to grow. This often causes woman concern but if there is no heavy bleeding, it is probably normal"
I hope that eases your mind but if it really is making you feel ill at ease go and see your GP.

If you are too concerned I would say visit your gp just to be sure.
wishing you a H&H pregnancy :)

Yes i did experience achey lower back pain for the most part of the 1st trimester especially at the beginning. I'd say it would be normal but if it worries you maybe see your doctor just to be sure.

I think it's pretty common, I had a sore lower back and mid thorasic area, I had acupuncture and massage and put a heat pack on it.
Congratulations on your pregnancy :)

Thanks soooooo much for all the responses girls, really appreciate it heaps!
Eng - Thanks sweetie - I'm seeing my GP tomorrow at 1pm now and not too worried anymore as my back has been much better since yesterday, so I'd say it's normal like most of you's said and that everything is just stretching and growing. Will definitely mention it to my GP tomorrow though. ;) Oh and yes, I'll definitely see you for lunch on Thursday!

Hi,
I had lower back pain in the first few weeks of pregnancy, a bit like the pain I used to experience when AF was on it's way. It wasn't nasty pain, but it was emotionally quite stressful because it reminded me of AF pain. My back pain came and went in the first 12 weeks, and it took me awhile to get used to it without freaking out. By the way, second trimester (and I imagine third trimester back pain) can be worse - that's what I'm experiencing now!
I think that if the back pain is not accompanied by bleeding, then you can be pretty sure that it's just your ligaments softening and stretching, and all the hormones can cause the pain.
Oh, and yes, heat is a perfectly okay way of easing the pain, as long as it's a safe temperature, not too hot. I've just bought a wheat bag which is doing wonders.
Good luck tomorrow!

Try this
Yoga, that’s all I can say – long term or short term. You need to relax and strengthen the muscles around your back (not just in the back). Try and find a pregnancy yoga class around you and get the basics right. Meanwhile start with the cat and tiger stretches, gently.
