My nephew has just been diagnosed as being Lactose intolerant and also with an egg allergy. I'm just wondering what formula other mums have given their lactose intolerant babies and how they reacted to them.
He's currently on S26 Soy, as was recommended to my sister by the allergy specialist but he doesn't like it. He is refusing to feed and it's causing her so much stress. Would a Lactose free formula taste more appealing to him or should she stick to what the specialist told her to give him?
We used the Karicare Lactose Free formula (pink tin) which DD liked. You can also get one made by Nestle but I don't know anything about it as we never tried it. You'd have to check the ingredients lists re egg though...
An avenue she may wish to explore is going the prescription formula route. A paediatrician can prescribe one that is possibly more pleasant tasting than the limited variety available in the shops. I am not that clued up with lactose intolerance (our issue has been milk protein intolerance), but apparently there are (according to our paediatrician) hundreds of specialised formulas available that are often "much better for bubs than soy or goats milk, for example". Just quoting him, my intention isn't to cause waves here. The primary reason why I am making this suggestion is that if the baby is used to whole milk they may well reject the modified varieties - so perhaps a specialist can suggest a more pleasant-tasting modified milk?

My DD2 was on a prescription for Karicare De-Lact. S26 also make an LF version. I prefered the lactose free because it still tastes good. She now drinks soy milk, but is quite a bit older.
There is an article in the breastfeeding/bottlefeeding section about babies being misdiagnosed with lactose intolerance instead of cows protein intolerance, also discusses how doctors arent really sure what to do and how to spot it. This is because lactose is found naturally in milk, and pretty much no babies have true lactose intolerance. Soy isn't recommended for boys or in general either unfortunately... maybe print off some of the articles I posted in those areas so she can make a more informed decision.
