Permanent Hair Straightening

I'm thinking of shouting myself permanent hair straightening for my Birthday this year.

I have thick, frizzy hair and I've been using a GHD for a number of years. But with two LO's I just find it impossible to spend the time on my hair and it ends up in a pony. Also, I've just moved to North Queensland and the humidity is making my hair impossible to manage. I've started swimming on a regular basis and between washing, drying and straightening my hair is taking so much time and as soon as the humidity hits it it is a frizz ball again :wall:

My hairdresser uses Goldwell Straight and Shine system and it sounds fantastic. What I'd like to know is:

Has anyone had their hair straightened? (using the Goldwell or any other system)

Was it as good as you expected?

Would you get it done again?

I know it will need touch ups as my hair grows out but the thought of just letting my hair air dry is so tempting.

i have no experience but i was warned against it as it can wreak ur hair pretty bad my hairdresser wouldnt do it for me mind u i was 16 at the time i love my GHD

My hairdresser is going to organise for me to see some of her clients that have had it done.

She promises me you can have it up in a pony, excercise and get sweaty, take the pony out and there will be no kinks or frizz at all.

It would give me back so much time.

oooOOOOooooo, sounds wonderful! Is it terribly expensive? Every time I've looked into really good permanent straightening, it costs an arm and a leg.

Depends on length and thickness of you hair but for my hair she is going to charge $350. She owns the salon so will do it at her home on the weekend(she has a home salon aswell). If I was to get it done in the salon it would be closer to $600. If I think of all the straightening products and time spent on you hair in a year, I can justify it.

And it's my 30th so I deserve a treat.

i had it done (cant remember what they used) but it didnt work. apparantly it was my hair type. its not even that curly really. my SIL has nicole kidman type curls and it worked for her. she loved it, and yes she was able to put it up etc (like you mentioned). it did look a bit wierd as the roots grew back they were curly. you have to keep getting it done or use your hair straightener to do roots after a while.

that seems pretty pricey. i think i paid under 200 when i got mine done(about 4 years ago though). i asked my new hairdresser and she said it would be about 190.

I chemically straightened my hair on and off for about 2yrs (this was before ds, now 4). I LOVED IT!!! It lasted about 4-6mts depending on regrowth so I had to keep going back. Like you my hair is ultra thick and frizzy! I've given in to the frizz now and use product to tame it back to a curl. That and I have FINALLY found a brilliant hairdresser who knows how to cut curly hair! She also thins it each visit.....much needed at the moment!

I found I still had kinks though, but the products have probably improved in the past 5 years. I was also told that sleeping on a satin pillow can help any straightening last a bit longer, either by the hairdresser or just straightening your hair at home. Not sure if this is true but can't hurt :D

ETA - I still found that if I wanted it to look really nice I still had to go over it with my straighteners before going out, but it only took about 5mins!

I've been looking into it as well, but don't know anyone who has it done. For $350 I would jump at the chance!
The humidity is a real killer for the hair isn't it!

My hairdresser did say that I'd have to use the GHD on the regrowth but thankfully the top of my hair is fairly straight, it's down the bottom that it is crazy.

Hollo: Sorry it didn't work for you. Funny how it works on some hair and not others. I've asked a few other salons and the quotes have been much higher. Perhaps it's because I live in a regional city and there isn't as much choice.

Sharon: so glad to hear you were happy with it. She pretty much guaranteed no kinks if I follow her instructions. For three days I have to pretty much leave my hair be, no touching, excess brusing, ties etc and then I can treat it as normal. I wear glasses so I have to use contacts for the first three days to avoid marks from the arms of the glasses.

Jodi: the humidity is insane. I spent ages doing my hair yesterday and today it's back up in a pony. So frustrating.

Oh I will be keeping an eye on this thread! My hair sounds identical to yours Spring. I constantly have my hair in either a pony or what I refer to as my Mummy bun (loose bun at the base of my head)
I never get a chance to straighten my hair and even if I do, later that day I have to wash my hair due to either baby vomit or something else, so my straight hair lasts a matter of hours.
My hairdresser quoted $600 for permanent hair straightening... I'd like to know it will be how I imagine it before I fork out that much on my hair.

I found it really hard to remember not to tuck it behind my ears! I did that the first time and ended up with a 'wave' on either side! :D

If all else fails, get your hair layered and thinned to within an inch of its' life then go hang out at the beach lots.... salt water always makes frizzy hair look nice and takes out the frizz fr some reason!!! :D

My Aunty had it done recently and had to get it done twice as it didn't take the first time very well. She had one of the most frizziest hair I have ever known and it now looks like she has it professionally straighten every day,:dance: all she does is wash and let air dry. She lives in Cairns and the humity does not effect it. I think she paid around the $500 mark but the hairdresser did the second treatment for free as the first lot didn't take that well. Can I also add it has taken years off her.
I say go for it!!

i actually enquired bout this today there are 2 types chemical and chemical free my hairdresser suggested chem free for me anyway $300 should last 3-5 mths.... you get this stuff put on then hair is straighten with a straightener then you leave it for 3 days the wash with special shampoo cond which is part of the $300 she said its not like a perm where you see the regrowth, it just lasts :lol:........ i'd love to do it but eeekk $300 our hairdresser does a wash, dry, straighten for $15 so i am happy with that for special occasions :lol:

I just talked with my hairdresser about this the other week for when I grow my hair out as its super curly and thick, I usually straighten it daily but it takes atleast 30min and I just dont have time with 3 little kids and a life.

My salon uses keratin straightening which is NOT chemical based and NOT bad for your hair. You can even have it done on bleached hair where with the chemical straightening you cant have it done on bleached or permed hair. It can last for anywhere up to 6mths depending on curl volume. She said she had someone with african type curly hair do it and it only lasted 2mths whereas someone with minimal wavy hair had it last for 8mths! Average time is about 5-6mths. It doesnt grow out, eventually the hair just regains its natural kink. If its long enough the top wont kink or curl unless its corkscrew curly.

Im going to get it done when my hair has grown out chin length. Im in the process of getting it dyed back to as close to my natural colour as possible so that the straightening is the only procedure I get done apart from a cut so DH doesnt pitch a fit at the cost of my haircare lol

Definately go for the non chemical keratin straightening, itll be better for your hair in the long run.

Hey does anyone know if it is safe to get done when breastfeeding? I've asked my hairdresser and she is asking the rep but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I had it done a few years back, my hair is fairly wavy but not super curly. I got it for free, was stopped in the street and asked to be a hair model for a demonstration thingy. It worked fairly well, i still had a bit of a wave, but I liked that, it lasted about 2 years, but that was because my hair grows out straight and then goes wavy down the bottom. I had an awesome time getting some killer asymetrical haircuts that would have been wasted on my wavy hair.

Eat a big meal before you go in, it takes aaaggggeeessss, lol.
