What different things have you done and what do you enjoy the most?
i started in nursing homes as an ain while i studied, then went on to be an RN in nursing homes for 3 years still occasionally work in them.
then went into teh hospital system, and hated it, i didnt have a very suuportive boss or education coordinator so gave that up ocne i was offered the job in the GP's surgery
i have since completed my pathology collection course, so take blood and specimines, have done courses in ECG, Spirometry and diabetic education as these are majour parts of my Day to day work.
i have also completed my Immunisation certificate so i am an accredited immuniser now :D
fav job is my current one, but do plan on furthering my education adn doing paramedics at some stage.
thing i hate about my job was teh shift work and the lack of support and the abuse you cop when your trying to help people in ED and they are so far gone on drugs its rediculous

Do you specialise in anything? (Mental health, oncology etc) I've not done any Post Graduate study but am looking into a few things at the moment.
What different things have you done and what do you enjoy the most? I've worked in Drug and Alcohol (for 4.5 years), on a Medical Ward, Theatre, and currently work in Day Proceedures (LOVING the hours!). What I enjoy the most... being able to help people (How cliche is that???!!!). BUT, I really do love it when someone comes in petrified of what is going to happen and you can help them to relax. When someone is in pain, and you can make it go away. When a family is distressed about a loved ones prognosis, and you can offer them comfort and visibly watch as a weight is lifted from their shoulders. I have examples from just yesterday and today! Yesterday I had a young girl come through who had a panic attack concerned about an altered feeling in her legs post surgery. Her heart rate became dangerously high. I was able to calm her down and comfort her - 90 minutes later I was waving her out the door with a smile on her face and complete calm around her.
Today I had a terminally ill patient come in with his wife for a routine proceedure (for him). He has had it multiple times but in a different area and they have always been able to stay together throughout it. Today, it was with us and we couldn't allow them to stay together for various reasons. She was in TEARS about leaving her husband. I was able to comfort and reassure her (and him) and could see her visibly relax once she knew what and where.
I am also not a fan of shift work - it is very difficult and taxing with a young child.

What different things have you done and what do you enjoy the most? Helping people and making a difference in there lives. Mid is very enjoyable and rewarding but very very busy. Shift work is hard with lack of child care facilities available

What different things have you done and what do you enjoy the most? I've worked on acute medical ward, surgical and now my ward has become an aged care ward which I actually do find I enjoy. Like mentioned I know it sounds cliched but it is great feeling helping people. My patients being elderly, and alot with cognitive issues like dementia does make them quite vulnerable, just making them feel settled, protected that sort of thing. They can be quite interesting to chat to to. We also get often patients with chronic illnesses who are at the end of their life, yes hard but we do keep them comfortable and offer support to family who always come back and thank us for making a difference in their loved ones last days.
Shift work can either be a pro or a con. My mum baby sits while i work so arvo shifts come in handy then as it only ends up being 4 hours we need care for between me leaving and Df coming home.
Weekend work sucks and so does xmas day work!
oh this is so interesting!! I start my RN's degree at uni on the 1st March.! I'm so scared and nervous and excited! I'm already a PC in a nursing home, so I'm hoping to get some help from the other nurses at work

Do you specialise in anything? I must say that aged care is my thing lol. I have spend my whole career in it and I dont mind it.
What different things have you done and what do you enjoy the most? I started in a nursing home as a Div 2 trainee.. Finished that and then they put me through my endorsement. I then did agency for awhile and then worked in more aged care before moving on to my current job. I LOVEEEEEEE it! lol work in a rehab ward for older people. And I love seeing that I make a difference and that they CAN go home with a bit of help from us. I was sick of seeing people die and wanted a better place to work. We do see deaths but nothing like a nursing home. I love that I work in a hospital and I get the chance to further my career. I may not be an RN but I feel that I am as good a worker as them. I plan on doing my IV course in the near future :) I hate working PM shifts tho :( but did I mention I love my job :D I love being a nurse I dont want to be anything else

What different things have you done and what do you enjoy the most? Medical, surgical, theatre, SCN, maternity ward, antenatal education and Birth suites. I am now in my dream job - I love being able to be there and support women & DP's from conception to the early days at home. I am finding a lot of interest in breast feeding suppoprt and wanting to do my lactation course. I also enjoyed surgical but our hospital is majorily under staffed so the work atmosphere sucked!! Midwifery is absolutely amazing. I must admit the lows are horrible and I wake my kifs up for cuddles after those shifts but once again it's being honoured to help the woman, DP & families through. Being a midwife is a special priviledge.
Shift work is hard but I am lucky that I have set days so that makes it easier.

Thanks so much for all of your replies :), it is so interesting.. There are so many things you can do and try! I am so excited about my prospects. I am not really sure what I would like to specialise in yet but apparently by doing an advanced diploma or something EEN's can now do cardiac, which may interest me as I have congenital heart disease.. I don't know if I would want to be in a Coronary Care ward though with the aged.. Maybe young adults with CHD like me.. Thats if I get through this of course! I am only into week 3 and have been studying so hard! I have had to be really self disciplined! I get distracted easily too, but we have been advised its not a breeze, so study or you wont pass!! Wish me luck :)

I have been a volunteer first aider, an Army Medic, a very well trained hospital nurse. I have worked in central Aus with the Army helping indigenous eye patients. I'm always looking out for more in my field of emergency care, but could also just pack it up tomorrow too and change just for something different!

What different things have you done and what do you enjoy the most? To start with emergency nursing, pallitive care, aged care, drug & alcohol, community general nursing (dressings etc), theatre but mostly Midwifery ( SCN, labour ward, antenatal and postnatal) most favourite is definately delivery suite and antenatal care. Although midwifery is my passion and I love it it is a hard place to work especially when I have secondary infertility. I hate shift work. Theatre holds no interest to me I am there for a break from midwifery. I plan on working in ICU and ED at some stage to increase my skills as I'll be doing remote nursing/midwifery when we move and I want these skills.

Where do you work? I don't at the moment - I've been primarily a SAHM for quite some time. However I have worked in a very wide range of areas. Private & Public Hospitals, Surgical, ED (a favourite place for me) small country hospitals which saw a wide range of issues - often quite confronting due to the lack of staff and the familiarity often with folks who were patients. (it's difficult resusing your best friends Dad or when a MVA comes in & they are friends etc etc etc - or when people want you to inspect their ulcers at the IGA!) Pathology collection, and I was an IV nurse, ICU (I really loved this), I did sleep medicine to certificate level, I worked for a respiratory physician, I worked in fetal medicine unit, (loved this) I also did education - I trained EEN's & did facilitation in clinical settings... (I loved education)...
I don't like nights - they really do me in. But that does depend on where I am working! I don't enjoy on any level aged care - I find it a bit tedious & sad... I enjoyed some time in women's health - I am passionate about women & their health.
I will do my mid at some stage - I think... I am concerned about working in "the system" as I hold strong ideals... I have considered and am still considering doing medicine... Not sure....
I love the aspect of just "being" with people. I find it an honour to share a journey however short with another in a time of need, illness, loss or anxiety. I also enjoy the learning & sharing that knowledge with others. I like the aspect of using my gut instincts... I love team work, learning from colleagues & clients!
I don't like the long hours that inevitable happen - nor do I like the power trips that many in this profession go on... It can be taxing the egos and tip toeing around. Institiutions are renown for this & hospitals are rife with the power games of different personalities.
