I had a friend stay here over the weekend and she thought she just had a chest infection anyway i just got a message from her saying she has turberculosis, first what is this, is it contagous, if so what action should we take to prevent it or lessen the effects from it.
Second question today DD1 who is almost 5 has been crying when she does a wee saying that it hurts my sister used to get systitus (sp?) a lot when she was little, should i take her to the drs?
I don't wish to scare you but turburculosis is a disease of the lungs that is really really serious. It is a notifiable disease in Australia which means that her Dr should be notifying the health authorities that she has it (they most likely have) there is then a process where everyone that your friend has been in contact with for a certain amount of time (I think it is more than 12 hours) will be notified and tested. If she was staying in your house all weekend then you should be at the top of the list.
If I were you I would be ringing your friend and asking how they are treating her and if she has been asked to provide a list of people that she has come into contact with (it is slightly different in every state) and then ringing and speaking to your GP about it.
As for your DD's issue - I would probably make a Dr's appointment about that as well - partiaularly if there is a family history of cystitis.

I'm with Muppity - I think a trip to the GP would be best for everyone! Explain to the secretary/nurse as they may want to keep you separate from everyone else. Just being careful of course.
DD here had some pain on urination recently and ended up being a very simple vaginal infection rather than a UTI or anything more. Good luck - it is an awful feeling wondering what is going on. xx

As everyone else allready stated TB is serious and needs to be treated and screened for. I hope your friends GP is doing things correctly.
As for DD I would take her to GP if I was you.
Definitely hop down to the drs ASAP if you suspect a wee infection - they can get painful fast. In fact I always make sure I have a sterile urine container at home so I can take a fresh wee sample if I ever suspect it - speeds things up a little.
Re the TB - try not to worry about it. Yes it is contagious but the actual rate of spread in the community is very low - you might have had the vaccine as a teenager (You would remember it because they give you a skin ***** test first and if a big lump comes up it means you've been exposed & you don't get the vaccine). Many people are exposed but never get ill - it's a bigger problem in communities where nutrition & hygeine standards are much lower. In any case, if any of you were to develop an active case, it involves treatment with ABs over a number of months - not nice, but do-able, kwim? My GF was a nurse in Darwin and she got it because it's pretty common up there. Have a chat to your dr about it, they may suggest some screening down the track to check your exposure.
thanks everyone, we all sat at the drs for 3 1/2 just waiting last night, DD has been given some AB's the dr wants to do futher testing on her but as she went to the toilet whilst we were waiting she couldnt get a sample so we are going back in a few days
MD - when we asked about the TB thats exactly what the dr said she said not to worry the chance of us getting it is very very slim especially as DH and I have been Vaxed for it and the kids were not in contact or anywhere near her and the dr also asked if she was coughing at all whilst she was here (she wasnt here long 18 hours tops) we said no she wasnt and she said not to worry at all then as when an infected person coughs that is how it is passed around and as she didnt cough we are 99.9% on the safe side, we will still be doing a screening on the weekend but the dr doesnt feel a need for it
