Supportive/unsupportive OB do they try to scare you out of VBAC attempt?

My OB who acutually started my on the idea of another VBAC attempt forgot to tell me he was leaving???? so a last minute change sees me with a new OB who will support me??? in a VBAC attempt but he does'nt recommend it???? has scared me, my question is do they go out of there way to do this in the hope that you will just opt for another CS, verus a trial of labour..
1 VB and 3 CS been in labour everytime I intend to be sensible and not take any unessecary risks... but my SUPPPOTIVE/UNSUPPORTIVE OB has put so much doubt in my mind I wonder if I am being silly in attempting it again???

My reasoning in wanting to attempt again is my baby has only one kidney, I want to know she is ready to be born verus CS a week before her due date..she does'nt need any other problems eg: breathing etc. Plus I always have issues with my milk supply so would like the chance to have the hormones do their job (I have a big enough problem without trying to force it to come early) and 4 other kidlets who require work, school, kindy runs and my 17 month old baby still needs her mum, it would be nice to not be out of action for ages... plus the get out of hospital early card would be fantastic, it is soo quiet and I get really distressed when the kids and DH go home.:wall:

BD - can you get the BT done that shows if the baby's lungs are ready? i'm not sure what exactly it is, but have seen it mentioned somewhere that there is a test they can do to see if the baby's lungs are mature enough. i can understand you wanting to trial a VB - if you've gone to dr Mc at w'gul and he's saying he's not keen on the idea of a VBAC for you, there has to be a reason and i'm guessing it might be to do with your baby's health. he was very supportive of VB and anti ANY intervention unless it was deemed necessary. if you are concerned talk to him more about why he wouldn't suggest it. press him for a reason. maybe he is thinking that the trauma of a labour that potentially (given your history) won't progress and then an emergency c/s will put too much stress on both you and the baby...

Thanks BG, the reasons given are risk of uterine rupture and not enough studies on what the likely hood is after 3 previous CS??? the doc is Danso at LRH. Stats he quoted to me for VBAC after 1 CS was 1:200 rupture risk which i am sure ins'nt correct. He can't give me stats for my case so can't recommended it, (certainly can scare the living daylights out of me by all the death/dying rupture talk, I realize they must give you all the facts which I knew anyway, but...I'm not sure the way hes doing it is'nt to make me just give up on the idea) and Dave Simon has'nt backed me up??? I guess they have to protect themselves so he is'nt saying that he intially suggested it or that we even talked about how to get the new doc to agree to a trial.
It is pretty sucky and I feel a bit ripped off, I really think I can do it!!! I have no idea why my babies get into distress, but am also willing to go to CS as soon as it becomes apparent that is the case or progress is too slow, in which case I can't see the point in contiuing as it always in my case ends in CS anyway.
Oh and baby girls health is'nt in question....all parties agree it does'nt matter how she is birthed and that she won't need immediate attention for her kidney straight after birth although a pead will be on hand to check her out.

I think you should still at least go into labour and if at any point she starts distressing, then you know what you have to do. Of course her health is paramount and I know you would never do anything to jepodise that and it sounds like you are confident that she is healthy enough for a vaginal birth. You're a smart woman and if you think that you can do it then I think you should. I do think that a lot of obs will give someone the impression that they are supportive of a VBAC, but 99% of the time there is something that conveniently happens to pop up in the last few weeks to make a VBAC impossible :rolleyes: I think it is cruel, especially when some of the 'reasons' are clearly a bit iffy, like babys size. Even a little bit of labour is going to be better for your baby than none at all.

Based on my research the evidence is overwhelming - vaginal birth is far safer than a repeat c-section. That is of course if there are no other issues which would preclude a vaginal birth anyway (e.g. placenta praevia etc.) If you are confident that your baby's kidney issue won't be affected by the way she is born, then don't let them use that as a way to wiggle out of supporting your VBAC. I know its not ideal but you are able to exercise your right to choose a different care provider at any point in your pregnancy. There is nothing worse than the people you trust with your care undermining your own confidence in yourself and your body. Like Trillian said, they conveniently manage to come up with some very dubious reasons to recommend against VBAC, usually at the eleventh hour when we're over being pregnant, tired and vulnerable.

Thanks Trill, thats excattly what i have been saying in my head and to Dh, OB's etc, so its nice to read it..you are right I will know pretty quickly if its going to work out or not when I go into labour and i am not taking any chances, she is way to precious for that.:)

Thanks Infinity, yes i read the study and went armed with my info to the OB...but of course..they treat it all a bit off hand. Yes I have a feeling at the 11th hour he is going to say the baby is too big as he has me booked for a US at 38 weeks..we will see???

Well how long have you gestated for with your previous bubs? If you tend to go past dates, I would be working for a date a lot closer to your due date for a c/s, because if you are one of the lucky ones who need to gestate for longer than 40 weeks ;) then having a baby at 38wks could mean that you are potentially giving birth to a prem baby kwim? Maybe you could use that as a bargaining chip, say you will agree to a tentative c/s being booked in but on a date a lot closer, or even past, your edd if you tend to go past dates and that if you absolultely MUST have a c/s, then you want to go into labour on your own so the baby has the benefits of the labour and you will come in for a c/s. In reality, planning for a c/s when there is no good reason for it at this point in time just makes things more convenient for them, when it should be about making it convenient for YOU. I have been quite fortunate that I have gotten a EDD that is past what I think my EDD is.
It buys me about 1 week.
2 of my kids were well overdue 2 weeks and nearly 3 weeks, so yes that was a concern to me that I would be potenially agreeing to deliver a baby that was reallly not close to delivery and would have complications assoicated with that. The other 2 kids were 10 days early and 4 days early, I kind of feel this bub will be early I am so busy with school, kindy runs and carrying my 17 month old who has only just started walking, along with the heat etc: My body feels like it is getting ready, but then I thought that with my eldest who was the longest overdue, so I guess you never know???

Anyway thats all a bit rambley, but yes all those thoughts have ran through, I have'nt discussed any dates with the OB I am waiting for him to bring it up!!! He did say that if we are going to VBAC attempt we will look at 10 days overdue then start disscussing things, I doubt we will get there.
