Still wrapping at 11months...

DS2 is 11 months (2 weeks off his 1st bday) and we're still wrapping. I have tried a number of times to ease out of it but so far we've had no success.

I am a little confused as to if it's something he likes or dislikes at times. Sometimes i can go into him and he seems so frustrated with the wrap that i think 'ok he's finally had enough' and then begin trying to use the sleeping bag and we have terrible nights. He ends up being so restless, moving all over the cot, banging the sides, whinging in his sleep and i end up feeding him to settle/comfort a couple of times a night.

We'd just attempted about 2 nights without the wrap and last night he was the most difficult he's been to settle (at bedtime) in a while and i ended up getting the sheet out again and wrapping him. He slept through until 4am. So i think the wrap made a difference... The nights prior to that i'd done at least 2 feeds within that time.

We use a cot sheet (and i think you call it) the 'angel wrap' style but with one are in and one arm out. Have done this for a looonnnnggg time. If he wants to continue i'm fine with that but obviously being the age he is i'm just trying to listen/look for the cues from him to tell me he's had enough.

Just wondering if there are many out there who have or still are wrapping at a similar age and how you are finding it? And how you finally did away with it? I'm really not sure what else to do as DS1 was out of a wrap and into sleeping bag by 6months with no issue at all in transition.

My son is 14 months and is still wrapped for some sleeps. Day sleeps, mainly. He will happily go down at night without wrapping, but only for DH and only if DH lies on our bed with him. I've tried it, and for some reason it only works for DH and not me.

Thanks BW, tonight he went down like an absolute angel and lately he's been waking after the first hour... he hasn't even done that tonight. Maybe he even needs reasureance and the feel of being without the wrap sometimes to realise how much he still really likes it :dunno:

The snuggle in the bed must be something your DS is saving for dad. They're funny in the ways that they can get set on things.

I think we'll try wrapping a little longer until he tells me otherwise again :)

I wrapped my DS until nearly 1. I had to stop as it was just too hot for him in the summer. We went cold turkey and it was about 2 weeks of continueous 1-2 hourly night waking. Its wasnt nice for any of us but i just couldnt see any other way as it was just way too hot and he also was getting frustrated with it and unwrapping himself. I would just keep going into his room and pat and stroke him back to sleep.
I will say though that for this baby i probably wont wrap past 8 months. Just my opinion but i felt it was so much harder with a 1 yo as he 'knew more' if that makes sense?

When DS was about 10mnths we went to a sleep school where they suggested we start to wrap him again to so that it became the sleep cue, we wrapped him religiously for a month or so and then weaned him off it slowly over the next 4-6 mnths.

Mrs B26 the heat over summer could be a bit of an issue at times but if i tried to not wrap him and/or tuck him in (nice and tight) he just wouldn't settle. I agree at this age they really do know a lot more about what they want and it's hard to get out of the habit.

Kelebek i think our transition is going to be a slow one like you described with your son. Of a night if he unwraps a bit i leave him but the initial falling asleep seems to only happen well if we wrap him nice and tight.

It sounds as though there are a couple out there that still wrap at this age, i'll just have to go with him and try and wean him off in some way over the next few months. He's currently sleeping much better than he was last week with the wrap. Cheeky boy :)

The sleep school said it would take time to wean from the wrap because it becomes their sleep cue, ie they associate the being wrapped feeling to bed time and go to sleep :dunno: it certainly helped at the time as he did sleep better. Do what works at the time, knowing that it may not work next but will the next after that.

I used the angel wrap for DS for day sleeps till just before he turned 1. I was lucky in that he hadn't been wrapped at night since about 4 months, and he was fine with that (we used a sleeping bag over winter, but got rid of it when the weather got warmer). Anyway, I was also finding the hot weather and wrapping an issue, especially when we were camping and there was no air con.

I stopped wrapping when my DS became more mobile. He doesn't crawl and only learned to bum shuffle and sit himself up just before his first birthday. I took that as a cue to stop wrapping, as he was becoming more interested in playing bed bed, rather than just lying still and eventually going to sleep. It did take a while for him to start having longer sleeps without the wrap. For a few weeks I would still wrap if I wanted him to have a long sleep (e.g. on the day of his birthday party I wanted him to have a long morning sleep so he would be ok without an arvo one), then one day he rolled over from back to tummy while wrapped and got stuck. That was the last time I tried wrapping him.

So I guess what I'm getting at is that I reckon your DS will let you know when he doesn't want to be wrapped anymore. Even so, it might take a little while to kget back into good sleeping habits without it.

Kelebek, i would say the wrap is definately a sleep cue for my DS. That and i feed him all warpped up in the rocking chair before each sleep. Not until he falls asleep but he definately relaxes in my arms and gets sleepy. When we were trying no wrap i'd still do the same but he wouldn't relax as much. Still falling asleep wasn't always a problem but the night waking was.

gypsy79 we are kind of opposite to you. Day sleeps are ok, he'd still sleep fairly well but night sleeps he just kept waking or half-waking and whinging in his sleep. He's sleeping so well again right now being wrapped and i suppose my main concern is that we're both getting some quality sleep. I'm hoping that one day he'll just decide he doesn't want it and there won't be any transition needed. Do you think it's possible :p ;)
