I'm a learner, never really had to worry about it, but i just bought a car to pick up on Wednesday hopefully.
What do I do?
I keep trying quotes online and they all ask how long I have held my license for... I assume they mean P's at least. Not L's? Or is it ANY license, including L's?
Can I get comprehensive in my name on my L's?
Call one of the insurance companies. They will be able to tell you. I'm pretty sure you can get insurance in your name on your Ls - I vaguely recall having done it.
OK, I know it varies between states, so I can only speak about what its like in Victoria.
They want to know how long you have had your license, to give you a rating. Your Ps count so it'd be <1 year. Im not sure if your Ls count as its a permit not a license.
If your parents have comp. insurance and have had for a long time you might be able to talkt hem into a higher rating - I did with AAMI as my parents had been insured with them for 20 years, I started as a rating 3 not a rating 5.
When I sold insurance, they wanted to know how long you have had your license to drive by yourself, so your p's. You can get the insurance in your name, but you may not be allowed to be a 'driver' on the policy until you have your license. You probably have to speak to them directly to get the insurance, red flags will come up if you don't have your license already. GL
my sister got insurance but shes had to pay tons for hers as an L plater but she bought her own car so she had to but im pretty sure coz of how old u are u should be fine to get it and it'll get cheaper when u turn 25 at least thats how it is in vic

Pandora, my parents never had comprehensive, though not sure it counts since I'm 23 so I think any discount I'd have been eligible for would have been well expired by now LMAO
another thing is shel over 25 maybe u could get the insurance in her name coz it might be a bit cheaper and u can be listed as a driver and u could get a discount coz u can say no one under 21 will be driving i know some places do it in vic and then next year when u turn 25 u can have it as no one under 25 will be driving then u could get even more discount HTH :)
Leasha, I don't think your parents would need comprehensive? Even if they just had 3rd party, you might still be able to get some sort of reduction in price?? Though I could be totally wrong here too.
Most insurance companies also offer a reduction in your premium if you do a skilled drivers course. I know AAMI reduce your premium by 10% if you do one of those courses. You can even check out when they have a course next available (Sunday 21st March @ Brissie TAFE, Gateway Campus ;) )
Do you have contents insurance? If you do, you could ring your insurer and ask if they do car insurance. You might get a little discount for mulitple policies.
Oh, 3rd party is compulsory - is that only in QLD?
Also if your partner has had comprehensive insurance and you have been together more than five years you can claim their rating......I did this recently....previously the car i drove had been insured in my mothers name as it was cheaper and when we bought a new car I was able to claim DHs rating 1...so you may be able to look into that side of things as well.....
