Birthday barbie on Mother's Day?

Hey all,

Looking for some opinions on my birthday options for this year...

My bday is on May 8th, which is always annoyingly close to Mothers Day.

This year it happens to be my 30th birthday and I will be about 32wks pg! So I want to do something bigger and more special than just the standard have a few people round for drinks, but I am restricted by being pg! So I don't want to do anything centred massively around alcohol or being out late (eg drinks at a bar).

So my current thinking is I'll do a banquet dinner for my friends on Sat night, at a local Chinese restaurant, then I was thinking Sunday for a lunch time barbie at home, inviting family - aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

Problem is Sunday is Mothers Day!

Or is it not a problem? Opinions? Ideas?

If it's family I can't see that it would be a problem. Are you able to ask people before hand whether they have other plans for Mothers Day?

I agree you should ask people beforehand, but being your 30th you only turn 30 once (well sometimes a few more times in some people :p) and mothers day is every year so im sure that everyone will be able to be there for you.

Anyways mothers day when i was a kid was in the morning, we would spoil mum cook her breaky give her pressies then at lunch time she would say we were free to do what we want.

I thought you were going to say you wanted a Birthday "Barbie" for Mother's Day LOL! But this is better. I think Family should understand :D

I personally wouldn't be worried about it being Mothers' Day, but I'm always surprised by some people who make a really big thing of it and get their noses out of joint about stuff being on that day. Ultimately, though, if it's a huge problem people don't have to come!

Could you maybe make it breakfast/brunch/afternoon tea (a really nice one)/dinner? That way the precious 'lunch' spot is free for people. Or, could your family come on the Saturday night?

Just do what you want to do, but don't be disappointed if some people elect for a more traditional Mothers' Day.

being family it should be ok being on Mothers Day (i'm turning 30 on the 8th too!) - we would be having a bbq or something that day if it weren't for the fact we're having DD's birthday party 3 weeks later and then we'll have a cake and maybe a few drinks later in the day for mine as well...

Thanks all, I feel a bit better now - I kinda thought that being family it'd be ok - we'd be celebrating with our mums there, so that'd be nice.

The only thought is yes - the lunch spot is generally a precious mothers day thing, maybe I'll consider afternoon tea instead!

afternoon tea is probably a good idea. then you're not stepping on toes of anyone that wants to do brunch or lunch as their immediate family unit.

and yes, not a bad day for turning 30 (i'm still in denial and trying everything to get DH to give up on "celebrating" it though!)

Yummmo... afternoon tea... let's think.... (you could call it 'high tea' if you want to be really classy!)

scones with jam and cream
little sandwiches (fancy ones with no crusts! - egg and lettuce, roast beef with tomato, ham and salad)
petit fours (make or buy) (or similar - a couple of slices, cupcakes, fudge - whatever you do best)
ice creams and fairy bread for the kids
a packet or two of chips
feta, caramelised onion and cherry tomatoes on mini squares of puff pastry (or melba toasts)
gourmet party pies, sausage rolls and quiches
cheese and spinach triangles
nice teas, coffee and maybe bubbly?
and of course a yummy cake for the birthday girl! (or use the cupcakes as your cake)

avoid to keep costs down: cheese platter (cheese cost a fortune!!)
beer (maybe you don't really need at afternoon tea)
nuts
fruit (can actually be really pricey, and at the moment we don't really have the nice cheap summer fruits)

to make the day easier:
make ahead and freeze (or buy and have in freezer) quiche, party pies, sausage rolls, cheese & spinach triangles
day before - get everything like chips (stuff that's in packets and doesn't need to go in fridge) and put it on the table (or wherever you're serving it from) sitting in/on the bowls you will be serving it in, get glasses out, plates/serviettes etc - then go out with your friends and have a ball.

beware: you don't need all of this food! it's just some ideas... remember everyone will be full from lunch!

the benefit of a may bday - you can avoid stuff you don't want the kids to have (like ice cream) and stick with healthier stuff like sandwiches and sausage rolls/quiches (home made taste better and are cheaper than shop bought - and you can put them in the oven from frozen so you can make in advance and ONLY heat what you need! the rest can become awesome snack food for you in the lead up to bubby arriving!)

we're having arvo tea for DD's birthday with some of the stuff listed. we're setting aside a drawer in the freezer and just filling it as we go over the next month or two. sausage rolls (DH will make), quiches (i'll make - to keep cost down you can do JUST egg and milk - anything else is up to your taste and budget). we'll add some ****tail franks (can't not have them at a kids party). may make some mini pizzas or pizza pinwheels. we will do cheese and kabana for the grown ups (cheese can be cut up and then used for grating in cooking later if not used, kabana can be frozen and cooked later for snacks for DH). chips (will get used later if not eaten), sweet food we'll probably keep to a minimum as DD doesn't need it and some of the other kids go a bit hyper - but we'll see what is happening at the time.

I've never attempted my own quiches/sausage rolls/mini pizzas. Might start giving it a go before the day!

they're mostly pretty easy to do - PM me if you want details. simple, taste good - and are great fall backs in the freezer!
