advice on working with organza and satin

Well i have drafted my pattern, and cut the real pieces for DD"s flower girl dress.

Now before i dive in any one have any tips of sewing and overlocking with organza and satin??

My first tip would be have a test run on some cut offs so you can get a feel of what its going to be like to sew and overlock as I know from experience it can be a tad slippery at first till you get the hang of it!! :)

I just made my daughters flower girl dress, plus a flower girl dress for a 2 year old and an 8 week old. THey were all satin and organza and i didn't have any problems at all with the material.
Just make sure you edge the organza as soon as you cut it cause it frays alot pretty quickly!

Dee what do you mean by edge it

Dee means overlock or zigzag it.

Use a brand new fine needle - I like 70s for satin, and I use a new one for every project because I am a spoiled princess :)

Do a test seam on two layers of scrap just to be sure it doesn't pucker.

I am sewing it into the seam of the bodice so might keep it somewhere super safe until ready to do it.
I need to get the right needles anyhow - just checked and only have universal and 1 stretch (i supposed stretch could work though). and some good thread.

will aim to do a fine rolled hem on the arm holes though to finish it off... oooh i hope it works out haha... i hate having to repeat things!

If you have a walking foot then use that to help prevent it slipping or you can use baking paper which just tears away (do it gently) afterwards ;)

tissue paper sometimes easier to take off than baking paper.

I wish I had a walking foot! Have ordered one but the shop is taking FOREVER!

Don't use a stretch needle - they have a more rounded tip so are more likely to break the fine threads of organza. In stretch fabrics they are supposed push threads aside, particularly with knits so they don't cause runs. In organza and satin this would be a baaaaaaad thing.

I just used a zigzag stitch to edge the organza. Even if you are sewing it into another seam i'd still edge it first, else it can still keep fraying and come out from the seam.

do you think the overlocker needles matter if they are ballpoint?
