Is there anything I can do to help out DS with his awful dry cough which is keeping him awake all night? I've given him panadol and put eucy rub on his chest (and even the soles of his feet in case that theory holds any water). I don't have a vaporiser- maybe it will help if I put a big bowl of steaming water in his room? Or a teaspoon of honey?

vaporisers are normally to break up mucous, so if its a dry cough it may not do a whole lot - ask at the chemist though. Ours hire them out (vaporisers) so they would know in what circumstances to use them.
I was going to suggest honey - can you do it in a warm drink (like leomon/honey in water?)
Elevate his mattress a little at the head if you haven't already done so.....
And yes I find honey extremely beneficial for all my family's coughs... I swear by manuka honey which is available at the supermarket, sometimes in the health food section. It's a bit more expensive but fabulous.
I swallow it by the teaspoon full to really coat the throat and stop that annoying tickle. Not great for a little one's teeth but for one offs I break that rule here and there.

My open-minded :o doctor recommended an ivy leaf extract to me called Prospan. You can get it at the chemist and I feel it really does help with those all night coughs.
Interestingly, the doctor mentioned it has similar properties to Ventolin in that it helps to open the airways.
The dose is for 3 times a day, but I start the first one before bed, then usually have to only give one more dose sometime through the night to get the benefits.
We give our DD manuka honey, so if you have given your DS honey in the past, that would be my suggestion..
We also do the vicks on the chest and feet, along with nurofen or panadol.
And it does seem to provide relief here.
