What books are suitable for a 3 year old?

I'm not really sure what books to buy for DS - we have some disney ones and some other books that are just not suited for his age - more suited for DD1, and he's wanting to read some of MY books (fair enough, they are for children, but older children - roald dahl books, CS Lewis etc) and I wasn't going to start reading them to him until he was about 5 or 6.

So he's 3 and 2 months - I went and got "the cat in the hat" and we read that to him, which he absolutely adores! Just wondering what other books out there are suitable or recommended for 3 year olds? Cos I have absolutely no idea!

My DS is 4 and my DD almost 2 and a half and they both love the "Hairy Maclary" books. The Author is Lynley Dodd and they about a funny little dog called Hairy Maclary. You can get them at Target. At the moment their fav is Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack it's about a duck, it's great!

DH was reading Harry Potter to DS1 before DS2 was born, & he listened to a chapter at a time.

Series we read to him include: Hairy Maclary, Mr Men, Thomas the Tank Engine,When I'm Feeling (kind, loving, jealous etc) & little golden books. I like reading him the Dr Suess books, but the tounge ties in Hop on Pop etc annoy DH. We still read the 'younger' books as the bookcase is in his room & he can choose whatever he wants. We get non-fiction books (kids & adult with lots of pictures) from the library (mostly about cars - are you suprised?) and go through them with him too. DH had the atlas out last night & was planning a trip with him.

What about Mem Fox books? Possum Magic, Hattie and the Fox, Koala Lou, Shoes from Grandpa... we have all these -they're proper stories. DS already loves them, and I'd imagine they'd be even better again for an older child :).

My DS2 is 3.5yrs. He loves The Hairy Maclairy series!
Also Mem Fox books like Where is the green sheep.
Pamella Allen books like who sank the boat.
He also likes books of TV shows he watches, so I just got him a Chuggington story book.
All the Dr Seuss ones are a hit in this house.
You could also start reading him Winnie the Pooh.
We also read Dinosaur books, a series called How do Dinosaurs....by Jane Yolen & Mark Teague.
The very hungry caterpillar, I got a giant version of this that came with a hungry caterpillar and you can put the caterpillar through holes as you read.
You don't have to purchase all these books, trial and error is great if you are a member of your local library.
Another good series is the When I am feeling Sad, Happy, Angry & Scared by Trace Moroney, these books also teach them about their emotions.

DD1 loves the David Mellings books, we started getting them from the Library for her before she turned 3. There is the Scallywags, Tale of Jack Frost, The Kiss that missed and a few more. The pictures are fantastic and so are the stories.

We love the Gruffalo books, in fact anything by Julia Donaldson/Axel Scheffler. And other favs are by Tony Mitton/Guy Parker-Rees (eg All afloat on Noah's Boat,or Bumpus Rumpus Dinosaur Rumpus). John Birmingham is another oldie but good author too, his books have been around since I was a kid, which is a looong time ago now. The Dr Seuss ones are good too, cos they colour code them into pre-reader, early reader & older reader.

And if you've got the patience to read chapter by chapter (and your DS has the attention span), things like the original Blinky Bill, Magic Pudding, Winnie the Pooh (including the poems), Wind in the Willows are all gorgeous, although a bit more "work", cos not so many pictures.
