Help please! 5yo DS 'loosely' diagnosed with DAMP

Hi all

Yesterday, a paed assessed DS and loosely diagnosed a condition called DAMP- Deficits in Attention, Motor control and Perceptual Abilities. We were referred to him after his Prep/Grade 1 teachers voiced numerous concerns. We have been aware for a while that he was a little slow with his gross/fine motor skills but thought that he would catch up in his own time.

While awaiting his report, I have googled myself crazy looking for info but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot out there.

Just wondering if there was anyone who has had direct experience with this condition in their kids?

Any info would be so appreciated

I havent actually heard of it known as 'DAMP' but have come across children with special needs in the areas that you have mentioned.

The most important thing for you to know V is that by seeing a pead, you have taken the first step in helping your DS. I know sometimes these things are confronting but the sooner you can get help for him, the better it is for him.

I am sure your pead will refer you to other specialists and will also send a report back to the school as well.

In regards to motor control, he may recommend an occupational therapist for DS. You can help him in this area by giving him lots of tactile things, eg. lego is fantastic for developing fine motor, puzzles, play dough, colouring in, lots of cutting with scissors, etc.

I dont have time to write anymore at the moment but please know there are lots of other children out there who need help in these areas. :hug:
