Whats your cloth nappy changing routine?

Hi,

We only started using mcn's on our DS1 end of last year on our then 18month old and recently with our newborn son...so still rather new to cloth. It may seem a little silly asking this, but I just don't know too many who use cloth to have seen how there set up is.

I was just curious what your routine is for when changing them...just in case there is an easier and more hyengic way then what I've been doing it.

Currently my routine is that
* get the new nappy ready (I'll try to predict DS1's #2's and put a flushable liner in the nappy as it helps ALOT, I don't worry about this for DS2)
* I place DS1 or DS2 on the change table (I have a change table in both boys rooms)
* take old nappy off, unclip it, fold it up nicely and gently place it on the floor (this is where I'm wondering what the others do as I don't know if there is another option or is this what everyone else does too)
* I currently use disposable wipes, so I have a nappy bag ready hanging off the end of the change table and put the wipes in there, only sealing it up and taking it to the bin if it is half full or after #2's
* put new nappy on and finish dresssing
* put toddler on the ground or put newborn in his cot
* pick up nappy to take to nappy buckets

I keep the toddlers nappy bucket in the toilet as it fits nices in the corner and it is also close to empty contents and use the little squirt. I keep the newborns in the bathroom as I couldn't find a nappy bucket that would fit in the other corner of the toilet, so this was the only other place I could think of. I like to keep them separate for washing and sorting, plus the newborns are still really soft for his new tush. Our laundry in downstairs which you need to go outside to get to.

I would also like to start using cloth wipes, but can't get it in my mind how I could create a hygenic and easy way of doing this...like where do you keep the wipes and where do you keep water to dampen them with? What do you do with them once you've wiped (particularly the #2 ones)? Do you then just chuck them in with the nappies waiting to wash (that would cause a bit of a dilemma for me as my nappy buckets are not that big, so I would have to get another or a bigger one, and we already trip over the one in the bathroom - seriously our toilet and bathroom are not very big and the laundry being downstairs makes it even harder when the toddler wants to follow me down but not back up :rolleyes:).

I'm also curious what you's do when your out at the shops or whereever, particularly with #2's. I've noticed changing rooms are not that convenient with having anywhere to dispose of the contents easily, thankfully my DS1 has always timed his so we are at home or I've had DH or my mum to help. I have a wet bag, which if there is #2's I'll put in a nappy bag first then in the wet bag, after I've disposed of the contents - if I can.

What I used to do ...

Get the nappies ready to go. take off the old nappy, and if LS not required, drop straight into a pedal bin in the room which I used as a drypail. For wipes I tried keeping a solution of water / babywash ready to go but that got manky. Having a squeezy bottle of water worked better. Wipes go straight into the drypail, and I'd wash daily.

#2's would go into the bathroom where I'd LS and put them into another pedal bin.

When out, I'd put them all into a wetbag, and always use a liner for ease.

Mine's pretty much the same as yours.
I put mine on the floor while I finish changing and then empty/put it in the nappy bucket.
We only have a SS house though and the laundry is right next to DS' room so it goes straight into the bucket on the bench.

With my cloth wipes I keep them dry and just wet them under the tap before I need them. I keep some baby lotion on the change table just incase I get caught out - it works just as well, if not better than water. They really hardly take up any room in the bucket.
While I'm out I use biodegradable nappy sacks. That way if there is poo, it doesn't stink the nappy bag out, and because it's 'plastic bagged' DH is happier to handle it :dunno:

Me, I just take the old nappy off, wipe with the cloth wipe, chuck both on the floor at my foot together, put clean nappy on, dress and let him go, take the dirty nappy and wipe and throw them both in the nappy bucket.

I use face washers for wipes, they all get wet and put in a huggies wipes container (the big ones) ready to be pulled out and used immediately.

I think you will be fine with the nappy bucket you have if you use cloth wipes. They take up bugger all space ;) I have a small bucket and I wash them all before I go to bed, hang them in the morning.

lol, mine's so not as organised as any of those.

First of all DD is so wriggly I can't put her on a changetable at all so here it goes.
-Dampen facewasher or locate disposable wipes tub depending on what DD's pee smells like. If teething I am now only using water as her little bum seems to get burnt by wipes.

-Throw changemat in random location on lounge floor and get clean nappy ready hopping DD doesn't spot it and decide to try dismantle it. all the while making sure she isn't eating the facewasher/trying to empty the wipes tub.

- Try pin DD on the floor and distract her with a peek-a-block or if all else fails chase her and un snap nappy mid action maneuver.

- place used nappy to the side and once again hope DD doesn't spot it and try play with it. Bad with #2's :redface:

-wipe bum and place either disposable wipe or facewasher in used nappy and once again try stop DD grabbing it whilst also trying to stop the quick little thing emptying the wipes.

- once again pin DD down hopefully on clean nappy if she hasn't done one of her mid air in hands rolls.

-try pin DD down long enough whilst trying to stop her grabbing aforementioned pull aparts and do up nappy. this part seems to take a good 15 mins.

-Finally sit DD up and get dirty nappy complete with wipes/facewasher and empty wipes into bin if using wipes or walk nappy with facewasher into bathroom and dump in bucket. Wipe floor where dirty nappy was placed.

-if any solid waste I dump it down the loo and use the attachable shower attachment on my bath to rinse nappy/facewasher if used prior to dumping in bucket. I really do need a LS though.
