Advice on how to handle 'accidents'

DD (who is almost 2.5) has been toilet training since about Feb and has been going so well, She is in child care 3 days per week and up until yesterday, hadn't even had an accident while at child care.

Over the last week or so, she has been having a lot of accidents which were previously not happening. She went through 3 sets of clothes at child care today.

My question is, what do you think is the best way to handle it? I'm hoping that this behaviour isn't because she realises what is coming in about 3 weeks (her baby brother)

When she does go to the toilet she gets lots of praise and quite often gets a stamp on either her hand or a chart we have on the fridge. Child care do the same thing

experience, kids, once they have settled in to daycare/ kindy and have a few friends or things they enjoy playing, tend to have accidents because they are so busy playing they delay going to the toilet untill its too late. Thats normal, as long as its just pee, if its poop then there may be something else going on. Talk to her about it but I wouldnt worry too much

When they've been going really well for quite a while and start having accidents, it is often because the novelty has worn off, and they've become a little bit lazy - they don't want to leave play to go and wee *again*

The way to get around this is to make it a real drag to have an accident. So when she has one, get her to the bathroom, where she has to take off all of her own clothes by herself and take them to the washing machine/put in plastic bag/bucket/wherever. Take rsponsibility. Then she has to go and get her clean clothes by herself and then put them on by herself. All of this stuff is hard work, and eventually she'll realise it's easier just to go to the toilet.

When she does go to the toilet, make it as quick and easy as possible and get her back and playing. A strategy to get her to the toilet when she is refusing is to have a special shelf or holding area for whatever she's playing with, so she can come straight back to it. This works for me 98% of the time.

The baby is a possible cause, but don't assume or even think about it. The more you think that's the cause, the more it will be.

my Dd was on her way to TT before i had maree.
and she just did it herself 2 weeks ago so 3 montha after i had DD2

hope she is just adjusting..

could it be because she is constipated? that can cause frequency adn urgency in urination..

also when DD has an accident, we brush it off and just say oopsie. doesnt matter lets get some new undies on and go from there.

My DD1 is 27 months now and has been fully TT day and night for five months now. She did go through a few periods where she would have accidents regularly but because I knew it was genuinely an accident we didn't make a big deal about it. I just made sure that I told her that wees are only for the potty/toilet. She did have one accident two weeks ago where she wet her pants but ran to me and told me. She'd held on after it started and finished off in the potty. I think it was because she had a friend over and they were so busy playing that she didn't realise she needed to go until it started happening. I've heard many people say that this is quite common. I wouldn't attribute it to your new bubba's impending arrival. Sure kids can sense something but I don't think it's that extreme. It could just be a phase. The great thing is, you know she can do it so just keep doing what you've been doing, stay consistent and she'll get back on track.

PS I'm assuming that by accident you mean wee and not poo.....good luck!!

Today she has been much better but I have been asking her heaps if she needs to go, and I've actually made her go on a few occasions

doubletrouble - it def sounds like laziness on her part, she knows exactly what to do, but she doesn't want to miss out on what she is playing with

audax - I like the idea of making it a drag to her... will definitely try that one out!

kawazuki and mad scientist - its only for wees where the accidents are happening, she is doing poo fine on the toilet, so I dont think I need to worry there!

Great to hear that today was much better. I make DD sit on the toilet sometimes if she says that she doesn't need to go and she hasn't gone for a while. It's very rare that she doesn't end up going. You're doing a great job and so is she. It's a learning curve for you both. Just stay consistent and give yourself praise as well as her ;)
