What would you expect to pay?

I have a job interview tomorrow for a nanny job :dance:.. So far all I know about the job is: a 2yr old then a school pick up for 1 other child. Light house work while 2yr old sleeps, and 1 of the days I have to take him to swimming lessons . I may have to take other child to after school activities.. The family currently has a nanny who is leaving, so I hope they just offer me what they are paying her, but if they ask the question 'What do you charge?' Well, I am not sure. I am not qualified but have experience in Family Day Care.. So what would you expect to pay? I don't want to under cut myself, but don't want to go too high either.. The job would be perfect as it is only 2 days a week so it fits in with TAFE..

Most of the babysitting sites around here people charge $20 p/hr - highly qualified/experienced seem to be at ~$25. That is Melb - perhaps browse a few sites to get some idea of going rate! I think child care workers generally on $17 p/h in a centre.

Yeh I would have thought 18-20 an hour.
It doesnt seem enough though for the amount of work.

Base rate for cert 3 qualified CC workers at our centre is 42K pa so thats about $20 an hour.

I think $20 would be a good place to start, but like Mak said, do a little research and find out the average rate charged and then fit yourself into where you think you are with regard to experience etc.

I'd definately be looking at getting an hourly rate that is in line (or higher) then the federal award for child care workers.

As you are not qualified (no formal qualifications) you would be classed as level 1 in the award structure.

Here is an award for childcare workers in the ACT. I couldnt find one for QLD.
Child Care Worker Level 1 on commencement after 1 year in the industry 501.90 FT (38hrs) = $13.20 PH
after 2 years in the industry - 512.10 FT (38hrs) = $13.47

As you will be casual you are entitled to 25% loading which would bring you up to $16.50 PH for your 1st year or if its the 2nd year $16.83ph....this should be your minimum charge.

And then you should also take into consideration you travel. Will you be using your own car to pick up the other child? If so you should include a bit extra for the petrol and milage and wear and tear. So you might then put your hourly rate up to $20 per hour.

Then I would take into consideration that you will also be doing some domestic cleaning work...thats not something normal child care workers would do, so you might want to add a few extra dollars for that.

The interview went well, she was pretty laid back and seemed fairly neutral, so I really didn't get an idea one way or the other if I had the job, but she said she would call me Wednesday. She didn't ask how much i charged and I didn't ask what she paid! So, I guess if she offers me the job I will find out then! Fingers crossed..
