Are her feet too small?

May seem a strange question (but then again it is ME asking it, so you should all be used to it by now..)

DD1 has size 5 feet in those sneakers that you buy from k-mart/target - you know, the ones with characters on the side?

She is pretty tall, at last measurement she was around 86cm but has recently had a growth spurt (size 2 pants used to be a little long, now they are getting a little bit short) so I haven't measured her lately.

DS is in a 9 at 3 years, 3 months - I'm guessing his is normal for his height (not sure either cos I never get him measured, but he's over 100cm) and I'm pretty sure he was in about a 6 or 7 at the same age.

I'm worried that her feet are going to be too short for her (her father is 6 foot 7 and only has size 13 feet so has ankle problems because his feet are too short for his giant body). She's 20 months. Is this a standard size for this age? She's pretty clumsy and trips over really easily - wondering if this is because of the size of her feet?

I bought Matilda (22 months for those who don't know ;)) some Gumboots from Target yesterday in a size 4 and they are a little bit to big, all her other shoes are a size 3... so no your DD is a bigfoot compared to mine :lol:.

Hmmm not sure Mel - DD1 is 4 and in 8 or 9 size shoes. She had really small feet until last year when they suddenly went on a growth spurt! She was in size 6 at 3.5y so would have been in size 3-4 at your DD's age.

My DDD1 is a bit clumsy now as her feet have grown - before then we never had any fals, trips etc so i can't help with that theory.

her feet sound pretty normal to me, but if you are worried make sure you get her properly fitted for her shoes and consider something with ankle support so she doesn't get into bad habits young. My husband is 6'5" and a size 13 feet and he never gets problem with his feet being too small so I suspect there is no exact formula for what size feet you need to have for your height to avoid problems.

ETA my DS1 was a size 5 at 9 months when he started walking, my boytwin did not fit those same size 5 shoes until he was almost 2. Yet they both have excellent balance and no feet problems that I am aware of.

DD is in size 4 :) 5's are too big for her, we have put her in some but she clomps around in them :lol:, she is a shorty pants though, not sure if she has even hit 80cm :rofl: she was 77cm a couple of months ago, but doesn't look any taller, 12-18 month PP jeans need to be rolled up once or drag ont he ground like a little "homegirl"!!!

My niece is just over 3 and she is only just in a size 6 shoe now. she does have small, petite feet though. My girls have shortish feet too and were only in a 5-6 (depending on the brand) by 2yo and I just had a look in their blue books and there were 89 and 92cm at 2yo so tallish girls. Their feet look in proportion to their size now though. I would do what Traveller suggested and perhaps look at getting some inserts for her shoes so that her ankles stay in the right position with no rolling etc. And always make sure that her shoes are well fitted and you should have no problems with her ankles.

My DD is nearly 18 months, also very tall (97th percentile) and only half a shoe size bigger than your DD.

She is a bit clumsy too, but that's because she was born with a torticollis that hasn't been completely resolved so she is having some sessions with a paediatric physio at the moment - we have been given some exercises to do at home to help straighten her out (literally!) and at this age they respond so quickly.

Check out your DD's feet when she's walking around and standing still - see if her feet are straight or turned in. My DD's stood with her feet straight but her toes angled inward, particularly on the left foot and that was the foot she always tripped over with - the same side as her torticollis. She probably has it because she was a big bub (4.27kg) and was running out of room in utero.

If you think there is anything unusual about the positioning of your DD's feet, it might not hurt to just get her assessed by paediatric physio (not a normal physio, one who specialises in kids). I am lucky enough to have a stepmother who is a podiatrist and she steered me in the right direction.

Good point curly. Her toes point in a bit on both sides, that could be attributing to the clumsiness (I got the small feet/tall body = clumsy theory from DH of course)

I just measured her (as best I could by myself) and she's approximately 92cm at 20 months, so she is quite tall.

I wish my kids had small feet - Flynn is four in June but is in size 13. I bought him socks the other day - the packet said they were for 5-8 year olds!

Your DD may just grow up to have little feet. A schoolfriend of mine was 5 foot 9 (so not short) and had size 7 feet (which I would consider to be small....)

DD is just into a size 6 now and is almost 2.5yrs.. Not sure if that helps or not

Mel, Ashton has a size 6 foot... well he is in 7's at the moment but I tried some shoes on him yesterday that fit and were a 6 ;) He is a bit taller than Kelti I think, well he's 89cm. I've noticed she is a little pigeon toed, Ashton is on one foot too. This can make them fall over too.

i think that sounds about right! my DD is 9 months older than yours and weraing size 7/8
But her brothers are wearing big sizes too lol

DS2 just turned 4 and is wearing size 13!
