4mo on Antibiotics with tummy troubles...

Hi, My lovely DS1 has brought home some impetigo and given it to DS2 who is 4mo. :rolleyes:

He is on Flucloxacillin for it, and it seems to be clearing it up very well. He is exclusively BF and was quite an irregular pooper, but he is now pooping every nappy change, and it is quite smelly and not a beautiful mustard colour any more... And causing quite a big nappy rash (poor little guy). I assume it is a side effect of the medicine, which he still has to take for a week... Should I be giving him a pro-biotic to help counter the effects? And if so, which one?????

Also, he is due for his 4m shots, which were delayed due to the abs, and I want him to be in the best health possible when he gets them... Any help appreciated. Thanks. xo

I wouldn't be giving probiotics to a 4 month old, because I think that your breast milk shoud be probiotic enough! While it doesn't contain probiotics per se, regular feeding will expose him to the skin of your breast and nipple and breast milk does contain a gut protecting substance that will help repair the gut and return some balance to his digestive flora.

In the mean time, lots of good nappy cream at every change - chemists sell a boric acid / zinc and olive oil cream called BOZ which is good, and we use Weleda nappy change cream which has calendula in which is excellent, and I would highly recommend.

Thanks. Will get to the pharmacy tomorrow for some more cream. For now we have sudocream which is doing an ok job.

I agree with Schmickers. The only thing I can think of to add is to be very generous with the cream and perhaps try to squeeze in an extra feed or 2 to reduce the chance of dehydration.
