Girls' rooms colour schemes - help! :)

I've been dancing since yesterday :) DH has finally decided he feels bad about his babies not having beautiful bedrooms, and we've started taking steps to redecorate! We finally bought DD1 a 'big girls' bed' yesterday and we'll be repainting the kids' rooms this weekend. I just need some help!

I wanted to do DD1's room pink, and DD2's room green, but DH says we should just pick a pink and paint both rooms the same colour, then add coloured accessories to fit the 'theme'. So I'm adamant that DD2's room will be pink, green and white, but I have no idea what the 'complimentary' colour for DD1's room should be! Purple? Blue? Yellow? Help!

If it helps any, DD1's room is north-east-facing, and has pale pink curtains (which I'm thinking of replacing with the 'new' colour). Her new bed is dark timber - 'Light Walnut' it's called, but it's quite dark and warm. I'm thinking matching the timber furniture (bookshelf, bedside table etc) and doing the extra colour with curtains, carpet/rug, lamp and toys, kwim? DD2's room will be the same, pink walls and green accessories - it'll probably have a 'cooler' look as it faces the opposite direction.

I'll have pics of DD1's room soon (I just want to get her new Dora quilt covers washed and put on before I post pics on FB!) but I'd love your thoughts on what would make a good complimentary colour for her room. It doesn't have to be too grown-up as we're not planning on staying in this house for too long, maybe another 3-5 years, so it can be as girly as you like! :) TIA for any tips! This is my first home decoration project, I never had a pink room or girly stuff as a kid and before now we've been renting and/or broke and therefore unable to go nuts... this is going to be so much fun! :D

The only recommendation I have is that once you choose the pink colour that you want get one that is only half as bright. It is amazing how pink always looks so much brighter once it is actually on the wall. And if it is on every wall it can be totally unbearable if it is too dark.

Remember that each accent colour adds more expense - so if you are really set on having one green and white and one pink and white then it may work out cheaper that way rather than adding several accent colours to make two pink rooms different IYKWIM.

I'd recommend pink and purple for DD1s room. These are the colours in my DDs bedroom (along with mint green here and there) and they work well together and are very girly.

She has a mermaid theme so I just got some mermaid wall stickons and a few mermaid bits and pieces. She loves it.

If you go green, green & pink are good as are green & purple. We painted DD's room the green of a Huggies newborn nappy box & it works really well with lots of colours.

Pink and aqua are my favourite colours together :)
But for a girly room I think pale pink, baby yellow and white is lovely warm and pretty combo. I agree with Muppity on choosing the pink paint - the lighter the better, or it's too overpowering.

Thanks girls :D Yeah, we're definitely looking for something as pale as pale can be, DD1 is hyper enough without trying to get her to sleep in a fuchsia-coloured room! And DD2 is easily overstimulated so definitely baby, baby pastels for her room :)
Sticking to white and pink for the walls, then just adding little splashes of the additional colour using carpets/rugs (we're replacing the carpets *sometime* soon, I hope!), wall hangings and stuff like that, to keep costs down (great tip, Muppity!).

DD1 is all into butterflies atm too, I'm thinking maybe purple or a powder blue and going from there?

I actually like pink with an apricot-y colour - although it would have to be more of a purpley-pink :)

I am not a fan of having different color walls in houses, think it's because I grew up in a house where every room was a different color.
Can you keep the same color walls and pretty it up with wall decals, duvet covers and trimmings? I have seen some absolutely beautiful decals on the bambini pronto site that I intend to use for DD when she is old enough..or sooner :shhh:
The money you save on paint you could go to town on trimmings, so many of the baby shops now have full room themes, it really is just amazing how beautiful you can make a little girls room :)
We have a shop here in Melbourne called spindleberry and they specialise in room decor...it is just to die for :redface:

We have quite a bit of spearmint in our babies room, I just love the colour and it goes really well with pink and yellow. So I'd reccomend spearmint.

Donna, I found a link in my bookmarks that i thought i had lost, its for a U.S website, but it might give you some inspiration for colour schemes. Google for teensthemes dot com or kidsthemebedrooms dot cot. The kids one is obviously themed, but the teens/tweens one has some good colour combo's. There was a section when i first stumbled across this website, where you could check out other people's makeovers, it's where i found a green and pink/purple all in the one room, and inspired me to find some greeny coloured curtains to go with DD's pink and purple walls and doona cover :)
