Nappy rash - your suggestions??

All, really struggling to help heal DD's nappy rash, hoping someone has a fantastic suggestion for me...

Basically it started about 3wks ago - when her first molars started to push through. Was quite normal for a week or so (normal for her anyway, just pink all over and rashy-looking) but then she developed one particular sore on her buttock that became nasty, red, quite inflamed and eventually broke through the skin. Ouch.

Fast forward two weeks or so - there are now three or so of these red broken bits, along with a whole lot of smaller red dots. Not a rash, ie not heaps of tiny red dots, the skin around them is quite normal looking, but these red bits are really causing her pain.

She is in cloth nappies and we change her every two hours (sometimes more frequently). She has been getting nappy off time - maybe an hour or two every day, but it doesn't seem to be helping the broken skin.

We were using Bepanthen - went to the GP (Thursday, so a week ago) as we were worried about it, GP put her on oral ABs, changed her to two nappy creams - Hydrozole (which is a steriod-based, anti-fungal cream) and also a barrier cream that has zinc, wool fat and salycilic (sp?) acid in it, and possibly some other things, can't remember off the top of my head. She told us to put the Hydrozole on first then the barrier cream over that, which we find impossible as the barrier cream won't slide on over the first one, so we've been alternating at each nappy change and using the barrier cream at night.

These sores are really hurting her... I've called the GP again (twice, no call back yest so called again today but she doesn't work Weds :wall: ) and am waiting for a call back but in the mean time - does anyone have any suggestions???

Sher is normally such a happy girl but when we do nappy changes now it is clear she is hurting and it breaks my heart...

What you are already doin gis what I would have suggested. Can you try bathing her in some salty water to try and heal it? I hope it heals for her soon poor little bubba. xx

Thanks Sunshine, that's why I thought maybe someone would have a fabulous suggestion - I don't know what else to do for her.

Hadn't thought of a salt water bath - the GP told us to cut out all the bath bubbles etc until it clears, not sure about salt! I'll look into it...

I'd probably try using disposable nappies until it clears up. Also if you're using wipes maybe switch to cotton wool and water, I find wipes give my DS nappy rash so I always use the cotton wool and water and we rarely have a problem. HTH

ETA Meant to mention that a friend of mine who uses cloth nappies for her bub also had a problem with a fungal rash. Apparently the fungus (or whatever it is) can get imbedded in the cloth nappies so keeps reinfecting iykwim. She was told to soak all the nappies in detol to kill everything and also that it was really important to hang cloth nappies out on the line in the sun because that is a key part of killing off the bacteria/fungus in them.

Miss E, wow I had not thought about the bacteria in the cloth nappies... it has been a while since they got some sun (sadly missed the sunny weather in Melbourne recently and now the rain has set in...) so maybe I will do a strip wash and try and get them into the sun... and think about sposies.

OP with the nappies id just wash normally then pop some Canestan rinse in :hug:

My cloth nappy guru friend has just said that if we put her into sposies for a while, she might decide she doesn't like cloth anymore - has anyone had that problem???

i dont think she understands the concept of taht OP, DD1 went between the two with no issues

I was going to suggest a cannestan rinse too.

We've had some ripper nappy rash recently that was so bad it bled and I had to give constant pain relief to change him.
We were using alternatively bactroban ointment (script required) and curash powder. I know power really isn't recommended but we needed something to dry it out and it's the best one I've found to do this.
If the antifungal isn't really working then it's possibly not a fungal thing.
Using 2 fleece liners helper keep him dry too.

I agree with Olive - I doubt she'll even notice the difference between them.
However saying that it can work both ways. We found the plasticness of sposies made it 10times worse.

Guys thanks for all the suggestions... I will have a look at the Cannestan rinse, didn't even know it existed! Can I get it from the supermarket or is it a chemist thing?

Yeah I am a bit worried about the plasticness too... given she has sensitive skin that is prone to ezcema breakouts...

I'm going to give silk liners a go... that might help...

Just checked the forecast, Sat is looking "sunny" so I might try to do a strip wash next time I'm washing nappies, then maybe some Cannestan, then maybe some sunny sunshine on Sat.

That with the liners, fingers crossed.

Darn molars... they suck big time.

Not sure what the washing recommendations are for your nappies, but I would wash them on the hottest cycle possible to try and kill everything off. GL

have you tried Daktozin? - i absolutely swear by it its a nappy cream and anti fungal in one, can be bought otc from the chemist. - the little red dots you are describing is what my dd had when she had nappy thrush - i took took her to the gp and he said the little red dots are called satelliting where it branches out from the original source..

goodluck it's so horrible to see them in pain :(

ETA: forgot to mention that my dd's nappy thrush started clearing up within 5 hours of using the Daktozin

I 2nd the daktozin. Its fantstic stuff for the teething nappy rash. My DS suffers terribly from time to time and this stuff clears him up in 24 hours.
Give it a go if you have no joy with your other tricks

I have tried so many creams for this, and also for eczema as ds used to suffer quite badly. One pharmacist put me onto a cream called THE INVISIBLE GLOVE and it is the only thing that has worked. I absolutely swear by it. It is all natural and doesn't contain any steroids which i was trying to avoid. Might be worth a try along with the other suggestions.

Because I found it to be such a life saver, i feel like i have to sing its praises from the rooftops!

Girls thanks for all the suggestions!! I will have a look for the Daktozin... Jules, as much as your praise-singing made me smile, we have tried many all natural creams... but not the Invisible Glove. Might look into that after trying the others!
