When I got my pup I followed the breeders recommendations. In saying that it was 3 meals and after a week or two down to breakfast and dinner. Now she is on 1 meal per day.
I included a raw egg once a week and yoghurt (natural) with top quality dry food and mince.
All the best with your new addition.
Thank-you, Ill do that :D
Heys Cheshire,
When we got our lab, we got a feeding regime from our breeder - did yours not do this? with larger breed dogs like labs, you really do need a dry food that will *not* allow the dog to grow quicky. You really want the dog to grow gradually, so as not to put stress on bones & joints. We use Hills large breed puppy for our lab - and kept her on it until she was around 18 months and stopped growing.
What our breeder was feeding our pup was a mixture of oats / kangaroo mince / grated apple / carrot & some organic supplements. I'd make it up in huge batches and freeze them, with one in the fridge. I see you're in Victoria, my breeder was Catraz Kennels and if you google her and email her, she may be able to give you the recipe. Else I can hunt it out with Tara's papers.
Good luck :)
dont know if its coz we have a smaller dog (a jack russel) but we have food for him out all the time. Dhs dad is a vet and told us that this is the best way to do it. He only gets dry food, and we just fill his bowl up and he eats when he's hungry,
But maybe coz you have a bigger breed you do things differently, sorry im not much help lol.
I didn't feed my lab according to a schedule at all. With studying dog behaviour, I found that my lab really needed food as her incentive. She got 6 kongs a day when she went into her crate or when she was locked into her laundry or small space. We used food to deter destructive natures....
So all in all.... it doesn't really matter. I think that as long as they get 3 meals a day until they are 12-14 weeks than you are all good.
Definetly not a good idea to have food constantly available to a lab!! he'll turn into a porker!
CBG has given u great advice, though never heard of giving them yogurt!!Egg is very good for them though.
typically for any pup 3 meals a day. we always use science diet puppy and follow the instructions on the packet/tin. once theyre old enough we only give them dry food though. wet food is like 80% water or something ridiculous like that!
When we got our goldie its previous owner was feeding the pups weetbix with puppymilk for breaky!!!:o
if ur puppy has dry flakey skin adding flax seed oil to their food will fix that right up!
How fun a puppy!
:rofl::
