Runny nose+choking on phlem?

DS has had a really runny nose for the last couple of days, now he has started having really phlem-y coughing fits (a few times a day) that sometimes end in him gagging and what seems to be choking for a few seconds.
During the day it's scary enough but what do I do at night when I can't be watching him to make sure he clears his throat and can breathe?
Is there anything I can do to help with the congestion? I thought about raising his mattress but I don't know if it will help as he does it when he's sitting up anyway.

ETA: should I be taking him to the hospy? Other than these 2 symptoms he's 100% fine.

I would think he's probably ok, jsut keep an eye on him, tho as you say you can't do that 100% of the time. Maybe a humidifyer in his room and turn it off when you go to bed. Using an aspirator through the day might also get rid of the phlegm before it astually runs down his throat. :hug: it's so hard when they are sick like that. I hope he's better soon.

I don't have either of those :( (And no money to buy them either)

He does the wide mouth, silent gag for about 5 - 10 seconds. It's so scary. Even sitting out here on the computer, I feel like I should be sitting next to his bed incase he can't get it up. :( Not that I have any idea what I would do if he couldn't. It's not like its a lump of something that can be disloged by turning him upside down.

Oh hun :hug: an aspirator isn't very exxy. And you can usually hire humidifyers. You can get them at the pharmacy. What about some vicks or eucalyptus oil on a hanky near his head (not too close though as it can be irritating for young children, and not too much vicks either). During the day you could just put a bit of vicks or eucalyptus into a bowl of hot water near where he's playing. Just make sure it is out of reach! If he does choke, lean him forwards and gently pat him on the back. Could you maybe sleep in his room with him, or have him in bed with you, just for peace of mind?

Sorr to hear that Isaac is sick... It's horrible when they are sick... My little one is sick at the moment as well. Had the flu which has turned into a chest and ear infection (well early signs of)

Making a bathroom steam up and sit in there for a couple of mins (not long as you don't want them to get over heated) helps with coughing/bringing up phelgm. Some baby balsm on his chest/feet (as long as he's not walking and going to slip)

The thing you would have to look for is that the fluid isn't going onto his chest... watch for wheezing, loud breathing, rattle, vibrations when he breaths that kind of thing... Also watch him to see if he's pulling at the ears...

Otherwise the best thing for them is loads of cuddles, keep his fluids up, and keep him warm. :-) Hope your little man feels better soon!

I put baby vicks on his back and chest before bed, but he had another cough and a bit of a choke while I was B- feeding him to sleep. It helps a bit but not for very long, I'll see if i can find a hanky and try that too.

He sleeps in our room anyway but I dont know if I'll hear him.

He has been pulling his ears but I had thought he was just tired as it's not all the time...
*off to have a listen to his breathing*

ETA - Breathing sounds ok, he's breathing through his mouth though.... Which obviously makes sense since his nose is blocked lol :doh:
