Boys Toys... and the girls who love them.

So DP went and bought a Quad Bike off e-bay "for when we move", i really don't mind as to be honest I LOVE scooting around a farm on a 4-wheeler, been doing it on my Oma's farm since i was little.

I've always been a bit of a tomboy and enjoyed camping, bikes etc and love the fact that DD1 is exactly like her mum.
She's been pointing to the bike all day waiting for her dad to come home and take her for a spin (electric starts not working and with my dodgey fingers i can't get the pull start happening), he took off without her and she was far from impressed.
We met him in the paddock and they spent about 20min doing laps through puddles, in the mud and she laughed the whole time.

What is your favorite "BOYS TOY", is it you or a little tomboy you know?

My girls love our quad bike. DD1 does burnouts and everything on it where as DS is more reserved on it lol.

I'm a sucker for cars but I did grow up with a mechanic father who was obsessed with them so there was really no hope for me lol.

It's funny isn't it.. DD1 is more of a daredevil than MOST boys her age... i think it's great, she loves mud, bikes, cars, jumping in puddles (although wishing i hadn't taught her that sometimes :rofl:)

Big tomboy here. Expect my future DDs will be the same.

My nDP is an x-commercial fisherman, which is great for me because I love fishing. My sister & her DH have a boat, so the 4 of us are going out on it as a celebration once she gets through her chemo.

Ok so we have added to the toys since we originally posted - we now have 4 adult quads (cos yeah we NEED that many :shakehead:)
The girls have a suzuki 50cc Quad each, DD1's has full suspension and is a little bulkier than DD2's - both have personalised plates and name stickers :rofl:
they both have 12v John Deere Quads aswell as a John Deere Gator.

We have just bought them (off a friend) an Electric Razor 2 wheel motorbike - our cousin has training wheels that fit it so DD1 can learn to ride that around, it will last her for years (cousins 10yr old still uses his).

So who else has little tomboys or are into 'boys toys' themselves?

DD is definitely a tomboy. I got a cute video yesterday of her laughing her head off mowing the lawn on the ride on with Daddy. He used to have a trike, and she would get so worked up if he dared go on it without her! She has her own little baby quad, but gets frustrated because it's not fast enough lol.

Nah. I don't use the term "Tom boy" and I don't assign toys or activities as being the sole domain of a particular gender. It reinforces stereotypes and is used to control.

I can still remember the uproar when my mum bought one of my brothers a Baby Alive when he was a toddler in the late 70s.

I think kids (and adults) should be able to enjoy a wide range of toys and activities without being labelled as unusual and as someone who has gone outside their expected gender role.

This exactly. I was going to say the same but N2L you said it more eloquently than i could have. And same goes for DS. He's even been known to paint his nails from time to time ;) I think when we are still using terms like tomboy there is still gender equality issues because the opposite for a boy who plays with "girls toys" is seen as a derogatory.

I like the flow chart for deciding if it's a boys toy or a girls toy:

Do you use your genitals to operate it?
Yes > it's not for chidren
No > Boys and girls can play with it

As for traditional gender limited toys, we mainly have toys marketed to boys but my daughter also has dolls and all the kids share them. My daughter tends towards the bikes and the dolls, and my sons tend towards the dress ups and action toys.

As for me, I love my cars, and got shown today how much my kids do too.... Had a visit from "The Flying Doctor" today, and Mack didn't bat an eyelid when it got a bit noisy, lol. Might be going short course racing tomorrow, which will probably make me really want to get my little Esky built up for the track, and I still have my first car, which is also waiting for me to give it a birthday.
