TTC but abnormal cycle length

Hi...I'm trying to conceive(just starting) but my cycle length Is all over the place.
I came off the pill after 15 years about 8 months ago and I have had my period 5 times in those 8 months but one month it's a 5 week cycle and then the next month it's a 2 month cycle. I haven't had my p's for 2months now and so am wondering if I should go and see a GP to see how to go about charting my ovulation and how best to approach conceiving.. Or should I just wait til I get my p's again and go full steam ahead and just try and get preg or what? Any help would be appreciated!!

Hi, So have you tried charting your cycle? if not then there are a few different methods, firstly you can take your temperature every morning before you even get out of bed, You should notice a slight change in temp when you are ovulating and may stay the same until your next period. Also you can get LH level pee strips off ebay (oracle are pretty good and cheap) and you should test with them every day from day 12 to day 18 (if normal 28 day cycle) you will notice a solid line same color as the control line just as you are about to ovulate (I find that testing at about 6pm ish is a good time for me - sometimes the LH surge window is very very small so you have to keep ontop of testing to catch it, that's the downside to pee sticks :rolleyes:) - so using this in conjunction with temping you should get a pretty accurate day or approximate time frame of when you ovulate or are about to. If you dtd on the day when you have a spike in temp and a lh surge then you will have a good chance of conceiving - your GP will ask you to chart your cycle for a few months before they can help you anyway so it might be handy to get a head start on it. I also find that charting my CM (cervical mucus) is a really good way of finding out when i am about to ovulate, mine lasts for about 5 days. When your CM is very stringy and clear that is your fertile period. Once you dtd unprotected sperm can survive for approx 3 - 5 days (some say 6 but not too sure - i will keep you posted on that one :) ) Once the egg has been released that can survive for 12 - 24 hours (sometimes longer but to stay safe stick with 12 - 24) Good luck!

Oh, welcome to the club! I have massively irregular periods, I reckon it's a miracle I conceived my son! I think I'm Oing now, which is good because it's right on time for a normal 28 day cycle, but usually they're anywhere between 28 days and 6 months for me.

Hopefully they're going to stay normal from now on and all I needed was a pregnancy to "cure" the irregularity (this is my first cycle since I gave birth) because I am so desperate for a baby right now!
