Possets, Choking, Reflux?

can someone please tell me if this is normal.

bubs is quite feisty at the bottle when we start feeding. She gets really frustrated when I take it away to burp her. Once she has had about 40ml she settles, when she hits about 60ml she gets a bit sleepy - this is usually when we change her nappy and she brings up a bit of milk most of the time - enough to choke and make me lay her on her side to bring up the milk. Once she has nearly finished her feed she tends to get a bit sleepy/lazy and will choke and cough again.

By the time I put her down in her bassinet she is usually asleep or drifting off, and within about 10min she is bringing milk up again and usually followed by hiccups. During her night feeds this can be a nightmare to me cause I end up staying awake listening out for her throwing up or choking.

The MCHN told me to just raise her bassinet with a file or towel if I am concerned, but when we tried this she ends up squashed at the end of her bassinet

I know all babies posset, but this just seems a bit excessive?

Ds1 had silent reflux, we missed out on all the vomiting but he still had the milk going up and down is oesophagus and burning. Lots of back arching and screaming.

Don't know if this will help but this is what we did to help him:
Break for a burp halfway through EVERY feed! We had to persist to get the burp, sometimes it would take up to 20mins but the screaming was hell if we didn't do it.
Sit him upright as much as possible for each feed, not laying down.
Keep him sitting upright for approx 20mins after each feed to give the milk time to settle.
Phone books under the wheels/legs of the cot (NOT under the mattress!) to raise it.
For the first few weeks he slept in his pram next to the bed coz it was easier to have that raised and rock it back and forth to settle him.

Eventually we ended up with an appt with the gp and had medication made up by SJOG Murdoch that we had to pick up ever 2 weeks. He was on that until 7months, when he was on established solids that sat heavier in his stomach and he was sitting up longer.

We also bought a walker (and took the wheels off), for him to sit in. Everytime we lay him down he screamed, so this worked well for us.

Maybe ask the MCHN at your next visit as well? It was the MCHN who told us she thought ds1 had silent reflux after listening to him cry on morning. What about one of those sleeping wedge thingys so you can lay Isla on her side rather than on her back?

she just did it again! I finished feeding her well over and hour a go and she woke up had a bit a of a cry then threw up out of her nose too - poor thing.
I dunno what to do, I think its reflux - we called the chemist and they said it could be colic.

I gave her infacol at her last feed and she did burp quite well, but in general she has always burped well (from both ends)

I forgot to mention that we do already side sleep her - she won't sleep on her back.

Dd1 was like that, we worked out it was a reaction to my breastmilk and then the formula she was on but only after 8 months. Holding her upright after a feed made a big difference, and making sure the formula wasn't too warm as it seemed to make it worse. Looking back on the photos of her she looked very pale until she weaned and changed formulas. Hope you can work out what's wrong.

we are using nan ha gold, which I think is very watery anyway.

MCHN agreed it sounded like reflux, we got in to see the GP today, he agreed it was reflux.

He prescribed 1/2 nexium granules sachet twice a day,

My sister had a reflux baby, thickened feeds can work quite well. Just look for AR formulas in the supermarket. It makes it harder to bring up.

The doctor didn't agree with the thickened formulas, as they can cause constipation.

So far so good, she hasnt had any bad episodes yet.

Yep they can, but so can antacids. Just need to have a bit of extra water during the day.

I hope everything works for you, it's horrible having them scream and cry and vomit because you feel so helpless.

Best thing for reflux is to keep them upright as much as possible. We would sit DS up after feeds and even slept him sitting up in his pram (wedged in at the sides) at times. It does tend to settle down with time, so hopefully in a couple of months she'll come right.
