Making baby pj's

Am I crazy for even thinking about it? I'm not a great sewer, I just dabble in it really and hope for the best! DD is outgrowing her size 1 wondersuits, I really love using them but they don't make size 2's (or not that i have found). I have some flannellete (sp?) material I used to make some burp cloths so I'd use that. Would I need any other material? It's only thin so I don't know if it would be very warm, but she wears grobags to bed anyway and i'd pop a singlet on underneath.

Can you point me to any designs? Not really sure what I'm after...probably a top and pants because i don't think I'm capable enough to make all in ones! But the pants would have feet so I wouldn't have to worry about socks falling off overnight. For the top would it be better to just make it like a long sleeve t-shirt or proper pj top with buttons? I would be worried about the buttons coming off though and the choking hazard.

Maybe I should just buy some size 2 pj's? Lol. But I think atm they would be too big for her anyway because the wondersuits are usually a size smaller than they say they are...or so I've found.

You can get snaps tape from Spotlight or Lincraft to use as buttons. It is similar to ribbon material with snaps attached. There are 2 ribbons, one with the top of the snaps, and one with the bottom and you sew to each side of the garment.

I bought a simplicity (3584) pattern a couple of weeks ago that has 2 piece pjs, for summer & winter & a dressing gown, in unisex size half - size 4

It has both a T-shirt style top & a button up top. Buttons wouldnt be an issue as long as they are sewn on properly, Ive had DD in button up pjs since she was around 8 months, or you could replace them with snaps which come in a set (you'd need a hammer to apply them) or the strip snaps as suggested by Kate

New look pattern # 6525...although large is up to 11kgs...so you may need to get a bigger pattern. I made my DS 2 x all in ones when newborn....put a zipper down the front instead of snap buttons etc at crotch.

Why dont you make some flanno pj pants....and buy a long sleeve white top - thats what i did for my girls. White top only cost $4.99 from bigw, then i did some applique, and sewed some of the design from the flanno pants, onto the centre of the white top....they turned out unreal.

My mother just made us some size 2 'onesies' for DD#2. They have zips (child undoes the snaps and escapes at night) and are better than the commercial ones mainly because of the quality of the zip she uses (you CAN get size 2 onesies - from Best N Less for about $10). We have an escaping nudist who can actually rip apart the chunky plastic zips on the cheap Chinese imports. We have a rather large nappy safety pin holding the top of the zip closed. Best having her warm and covered with a nappy on than naked in a wet puddle on a cold night.
