My breastmilk is too mature for her...?

DD2 is 3 weeks old. From the very get go she has seemed "internally troubled" as DH and I call it. Very stinky farts constantly (like rotten eggs), does not poo regularly - usually once every 3 days. This started before she had even finished passing all her meconium.

My other 2 pooed several times a day and I don't remember them being nearly as stinky as DD2 when they farted, or even farting this much. It's so strong that I often check her nappy, absolutely positive there is a poo, and there never is. The waft of air when I unwrap her swaddle really is something else!

She is growing well and gaining 200g a week so I must be doing something right, but all this wind is bugging me a bit. She is a bit of a snacker, she will only drink from one breast and not for very long either, maybe 15 mins max, then have a bit of a snooze and a bit of a spew then another little snack, and then grizzle for a while because she's got wind. It can take quite some time to get her settled again, she will have a few little possets and maybe a burp but it's generally when all the farting has passed that she will finally go back to sleep.

The other two would always have a really decent feed, empty the first breast and have 5-10 mins on the second breast. At this age they were having feeds that were 40mins to an hour long.

The midwife at the local chemist where I took DD2 to be weighed told me that DD2's farting is most likely because my breastmilk is a bit too mature for DD2's gut. The reason my milk is so rich is apparently because my body has done this before and so knows what it is doing.

Is this true? Is this why DD2 is so stinky? I have never heard such a thing before. Or is DD2 just exhibiting different but still normal feeding behaviour?

Unfortunately the midwife you saw has given you very incorrect and misleading information. At this stage your baby's behaviour seems fairly normal. I wonder what this midwife would be suggesting your baby drink? Your breastmilk is the most perfect food available to your baby.
Your baby seems to be feeding well and frowing well. Two big ticks. her feeding pattern sounds normal for a baby this age. However, her little gut is brand new - never been tried before. Chances are things will change as she grows and develops. In the early days one breast is usually enough for babies. Over time they graduate to having both breasts. I think at this stage all you need to do is take a "wait and see approach". If the wind becomes more of a problem rather than less, I would look to whether there is a family of allergies or food intolerances - but only if there is a problem. There's no point in trying to fix something that isn't necessarily broke!

Never heard it before either, going every 3 days can be normal for a bf baby, it means she is using up all she needs so that's a good thing. Check with the aba or mchn they will have the best info for you.

2 out of 3 of my babies only pooed once a week, one of those two done very stinky farts. The Last baby was the only one who pooed on a daily basis (almost everytime he hhad a nappy change for the first 4 months), and he had stinky farts too.

Mature milk? It sounds like this woman probably concocted this theory herself.

ETA all three of my babies were breastfed.

congrats hun...this sounds like my little man when he was a new born...I was freaking out casue DS1 was a super pooer but DS2 dwasnt? Once we got over the windy nights He has settled right down...I never gave him anything to combat the wind just breastmilk and always made sure i sat him upright after a feed to see if there was a burp :)

I have never heard of this either. It doesn't sound logical. I echo what eveyone else said - your baby sounds normal. She may be different from your other ones, but all babies are different. I would have suggested that maybe she has an intolerance to something in your diet, however, I think that Barb is right - it is too early to tell if this is an issue or not. I agree with "wait and see", as from what you described, everything sounds normal. :)

Do you have any other reason to be concerned about her, Curly? It sounds like you're doing a fabulous job (notwithstanding strange advice :dunno:)!
