DD2 went to the GP yesterday with earache and he says she has a hard blockage of wax in her ear. He can't see if there is an infection behind it due to the wax. He told me to put something in her ear to help get the wax out. I think I heard him say olive oil. (He was not English speaking so I had a little trouble understanding) Is that true? Is olive oil the best thing to put in. She is only 17 months and I don't want to use the harsh things you can get at the pharmacy.
Yes olive oil is ok to use, not sure how useful it will be though as it will only soften the wax, not dissolve it. Do not use it if your dd has had a perforated ear drum.
warming it a little may help too.

Go to the Chemist. You can by ear wax softener. Then when it is softened after a couple of days go back to a DECENT GP you can communicate easily with and they will syringe her ears to remove the blockages with warm soapy water.
I agree. Warm olive oil can be very helpful. The wax will soften and probably come out on its own.
Also just to state the obvious do not poke anything in the ear to try to remove the wax
My doctor told me not to put anything in my DS's ear as he wasn't sure whether the ear drum had perforated due to the infection. Started on antibiotics on Wednesday afternoon for ear and chest infection. I also gave him dymadon and nurofen (alternately, four hours apart) to help with the pain and the fever. No fever now but DS has crunchy wax sitting in the outer ear. Will be taking him back to the doctor next week. Good luck with DD's earache. It's traumatic seeing them in pain! :hug:
