Dreambaby mag locks - worth the money?

So my darling DS has figured out how to open cupboards and drawers:wall: I want to put locks on my kitchen and bathroom cupboards and drawers - just leaving the tupperware cupboard and drawer for him to "play" in as all others have glass and choking hazards etc

The mag locks seem good as they will avoid jammed fingers and keep him out - but they are exy - any feedback from those who have used them? Are they worth the money?

DS is our only child but we do plan on having more and our house is new (to us) so we'll be here for a while - does this make the locks more worthwhile?

We use the ones that you stick on the cupboards and have a silicon clip that goes across. They are good for cupboards..not drawers? I still have them on some cupboards like the one under my kitchen sink and laundry cupboard. Well worth the money IMO.

I have the ones like Heather and they work for drawers if they are on the corner.
We have the magnet locks at work (I think thats what mag locks are?) and they are pretty good, fiddley and a PITA if you lose the magnet! But your can't forget to lock them, which is a huge bonus.

Have you thought about the internal latch ones that screw into place, and instead of opening with a magnet you open the cupboard a little and push it unlocks. They are cheaper and just as good. Jazz sometimes pulls on the cupboard door and they haven't once come off or even slipped. I don't think they'd break in a hurry.

There are also the flexible thingos from bunnings that look like a safety pin iykwim. They are the dream baby ones too but have two methods of release where you have to push across and down. I found they seem to be longer and don't take time to install. If you do them tight enough they prevent trapped fingers. HTH!

Thanks for the feedback gals. I have a few of the flexible ones (left by the last owners) but I don't like the idea that if they aren't tight/put back on properly they arent effective iykwim. They seem good for things you only need to lock sometimes etc. I have read alot about the internal latches but lots of ppl have reported their kids figuring them out pretty quickly and also finger jams. I like the fact that the mag locks are the ones that child care places use - bodes well for lasting and being effective. I would plan to buy extra magnets in case of loss :)

The magnetic Dreambaby locks ROCK! They work really well and are strong - our boys have both yanked off the drawers to no avail. We have one on our knife drawer and one on our utensils drawer and feel perfectly safe. Just keep the magnetic openers out of sight :)

We have them too I love them, although dd locked the magnet in the draw, so we now have a spare one in a safe place.

I wish I'd bought them to be honest... but DH didn't want to get those. So, I have ones which lock across the handles instead. Guess they still keep unwanted guests out so they're working, just would've preferred the magnetic ones.

We put them in with DD1 and thought they were a bit of a waste as she never tried to get in to the cupboards but we are so happy we have them with DD2!! No amount of pulling and yanking from her has budged them :D We also keep a spare magnet in a safe place but that's because our neighbour regularly locks hers in the cupboard :lol:

We just keep our fun stuff in KEYED cupboards, and hide the keys up VERY high (DD2 knows how to use keys - DD1 needs help with keys). However ...

That is hard ... the little buggers are surprisingly resourceful. We have a mantelpiece in our kitchen that we usually keep all the 'good stuff' on (crackers, biscuits, chocolate, pegs) and DD2 has just worked out how to get up there. It is around 5' off the ground. I was very impressed, DD1 (whose crackers got eaten) was not so impressed.

We have our chemicals up on a shelf that is about 8' off the ground and the knives and sharp utensils on a shelf 6' off the ground and so far those two are safe. I never had these issues with the first child. The two of them are amazingly different.

I was just looking at the price of those mag locks and considering the price of most childproofing products, I don't think it's too bad. I like the fact they're invisible too.

Well we went to bunnings and they had 4 locks + key for $34.95 (4 locks without key were $37.95/2 locks with key $32.95) so thought the price was pretty good so we bought 20!!!! (5 packs) 16 for our kitchen/bathroom and 4 for mum n dads dangerous cupboards. Just have to install now!

Do they work well on drawers on the rolling tracks?

I have tried a few different plastic ones that are supposed to work on those types of drawers and they don't always catch.. and the annoying thing is they open a tad until they do catch and DD can just get her hand in there (she is a skinny little thing) and 1 by 1 pull out all my stuff.. drives me nuts!

Yael - I think as long as there is room to mount the "catch" on the side - then it will work ok.

They DO break. But that's in childcare, after a loooot of use. Loss of magnet was not so much an issue in that setting, I never had it happen, but when the magnet gets a bit old you have to get it in exactly the right spot. Also, repeated use can wear down the surface and leave a mark. But again, that's childcare, maybe more intensive use? Hard to say. Anyway, definitely effective, definitely reduce finger jams.
