Travel Insurance after 26 weeks.

Can anyone recommend a good travel insurance cover that is good for travel once you have passed 26 weeks. I will only be just passed when we travel and we return to Aus is the 28th week but so far all of the ones we have looked at seem to cut off between 23 & 26 weeks.

We need cover to the USA. I am sure there are plenty of people out there who have travelled at around this gestation and my ob has already said that he doesn't see that it would be a problem, so far the problem is finding good coverage!

We already had this trip booked when we found out we were pg! Starting to worry a bit that we wont be able to get cover.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Unfortunately I don't think you will find an insurance that will cover you if you go into premature labour..
Almost all of the Travel Insurances have the same policies with regards to pregnancy.

Have been doing research and Columbus Direct seems to cover travel up to 30 weeks which fits in with our dates. Just researching if they cover the baby if it does happen to arrive early.

sorry I have no suggestions for travel insurance but just last week I returned to Australia from East Africa at about 25 weeks. I didn't actually have any cover, my travel insurance had expired when I was living o/s and I kind of forgot about it. Anyway, for me, travelling at that stage was awful, so I just want to share my experience and hopefully some advice! Make sure your flights are as direct as possible, I had a few changeovers so the whole trip was almost 2 whole days. Be prepared for not being able to stretch out horizontally for the whole time (unless you're happy to lie on benches like I did out of desperation), and having to sleep upright is not very comfy with a belly. Hopefully you're not travelling alone, its a nightmare to have to go to the toilet every five minutes at the airport with bags and stuff. And big mistake I made, make sure you have US dollars (obviously you will anyway, going to US) to buy water with if you have any stop overs in other countries.. I didn't and due to being overly tired and full of pregnancy hormones almost balled my eyes out when I couldn't pay for a bottle of water! It was sooo embarrassing, the girls in the duty free insisted I just take a bottle without paying. Also the obvious, keep some snacks in your bag for between in-flight meals and request lots of water while flying. Oh also if you buy heaps of stuff for baby while you're away consider posting it back home, I almost got a massive charge for excess baggage but also embarrassingly, I started crying and they let me off.. Oh also if you're travelling economy ask for the first row behind business class for all the extra leg room, unless you're lucky enough to get upgraded!

Luckily we are traveling business class and although we have a short flight from Melb to Syd our Sydney to the USA flight is direct. Will be traveling with 2 1/2 yo & husband so he will be able to help out! We have already picked our seats on the flight so are happy with where we are sitting and DD has her own seat so no worrying about having to accommodate her on a lap.

We will be doing heaps of shopping at the outlets (stocking up) but we have done this many times before and know our limits - we actually pack an empty suitcase to bring our purchases back in! We are even leaving our stroller at home as we want a double baby jogger and they are half the price over there so we are pre-ordering one and picking it up the day we arrive!

marknjo - curious - what did you find about travel insurance covering your US trip? ...and which online US site did you shop from? sorry not to be helpful in answering your questions :)

cool, lucky you, business class and direct flight :) I wish I could've done that, but flights from Africa are soooo expensive as it is! Sounds like you're all sorted. I've had the travel bug for ages (last 'trip' lasted a year and a half!), so wishing I could go somewhere in the next couple of months but after the last flight I think I'll have to wait :( Great idea about the empty suitcase, and hopefully the exchange rate is good for you. Buliej - Will most likely go with Columbus Direct but we are going to speak to a friend who is a travel agent on the weekend to see what she says. Some of the companies that say they will only cover to 26 weeks will let you apply for extended cover it just costs a bit more. They don't advertise this but if you ask you can put in an application and it is done on a case by case basis. You need to get letters and stuff from your ob to say you are in perfect health etc. The only problem we might have is that our DD was a premmie so they may say no chance! I will post on here once we have bought a cover.

Bec - We got airfares on sale and the business class seats were cheaper than economy! Very lucky to get them I think! Keep and eye on the airline specials, you never know you may get a good BC deal and be able to go somewhere in comfort :)

We have finally locked in our travel insurance. We have gone with HCF. They cover up to 28 weeks without the need for any documentation. My ob today gave me a certificate confirming my dates that we can take with us incase any of the airlines ask so all is good. And because we are with Manchester Unity for our private health ins, we got 10% off as they are affiliated with HCF :)
