NT scan - Anyone had a high risk one pg, then a low risk the next pg?

Hi all,

Sorry, I have been getting quite nervous about the NT scan that is fast approaching. Last pg I had a high risk with 1 in 28 of my little girl having DS. It was such a stressful pgcy, and now I find myself getting quite anxious this time round.

What I am wanting to find out if anyone of you ladies especially those in the older age bracket 35+ yet happy to hear everyones experience, if you had a high risk with one pgcy then receive a low risk the next, or at least a risk level that the DR's were happy with.

I am so dreading next weeks u/s, yet I know I need to have it done, yet a DR today had me even more concerned. He said why are you having a NT scan and not going straightaway and having a cvs or amnio done? I mentioned to him that the midwives were the ones who made the appt for the NT scan. Then he said well your already high risk since being older, well I know that. Yet it does have me thinking more about what results others have faced second time round iykwim.

So if anyone has any encouraging news, please share it. I feel as though I am going to go a tad crazy by next week with this worry.

Hey Sweetie... I had a high one with dd1 and was 30. It was 1 in 19 for d/s and 1 in 29 for T18. We had a cvs.
2nd pregnancy I was so very nervous and got a great result....
This pregnancy... I am due a day before I turn 35 and was told that I was already high risk and I got an even better result that the 2nd one.

I know what you mean about nerves though. That whole experience is terrifying.

Just wanted to stop by and wish you luck for your upcoming NT scan and offer you my perspective.

The mothers' age is factored into the NT scan results to get your overall ratio. So being over 35 already this may bring your result numbers down. That's just the way they work the results out - part of it is age based. I had an NT scan done when I was 39. My results came back and they weren't good. I spent such alot of time worrying about this. I made myself sick with anxiety. Regardless of my final outcome when I thought about the NT scan in hindsight I came to the conclusion (my own personal view) that for a woman of my age the scan was nothing but unnecessary stress. There is a chance that you will have the NT scan and then they will still ask you to have CVS or an amnio. That is completely up to you of course. Some women will go through with their pregnancy regardless of outcome and then this makes the choice to have these tests irrelivant. I feel that because of my age that if I am lucky enough to get another chance at being PG I would skip the NT scan and just gave the CVS test done. That's just my opinion for myself but the NT scan and worry invovled took alot out of me.

Aussiegirl - I was hoping to have the CVS done first TBH with you, but then the Midwife ordered the scan. The stress with the NT scan was agonizing on me too, which is why I am soooo nervous this time round. Another reason why I couldnt believe the DR after bringing just having the CVS done, then when I agree with him he doesnt do anything about it. I would prefer to not have this stress but maybe this is how it is meant to play out for me, hopefully without the stress of high risk numbers. Thankyou.

Have the NT scan next week wednesday, have been so anxious, but was happy to hear bubs HB today at the Dr's. So has settled my mind down abit. Will let you know how the NT scan goes. hugs all.
