grandparents & 1st birthdays

I was talking to my mum yesterday about DD's first birthday next month. We aren't doing anything hugely big, MIL is flying down from Qld and I might invite a couple of friends with babies DD's age from Wagga, not sure if SIL & her bf will come but probably not, and FIL & his gf might be coming (I was really surprised at that as they haven't seen her since she was a few months old).

So it's only going to be a small celebration, but it is her 1st birthday. Mum said they won't be coming down as I'm going to visit them next weekend so they kind of see no need to come down here a few weeks after that. And they have tickets to a music concert on the Friday night, but DD's b'day is on Monday so I don't really see how that affects anything. They do live about 5 hours drive away.

I'm not sure if I should be upset about it or not, DF seemed pretty annoyed when I told him, but I can kind of understand their reasons (they are farmers so it's hard to leave the farm even for a couple of days, plus the travel/accomodation expense and the fact DD and I would have only visited them a couple of weeks earlier) although I think it would be nice if they were here.

I am also in the same situation, so I know how you feel my mum has also decided not to come to DS 1st birthday. Her reasoning is that it is too cold down here, we are Victoria and she lives in Qld. That really is her only reason, she can afford the flight and accommodation is no problem and she has also had plenty of time to organise it with her work.. but no its too cold here. Sorry to ramble, but it has really upset me :(

It is her 1st, and her only 1st, so yep, like your DF, when it happened to me with the ILs, I was annoyed.

Maybe suggest your mum and dad might like to throw her a little party in the couple of weeks before hand?

I really don't think it is a big deal. A one year old isn't really going to notice, so honestly it is all about the adults anyway. If your inclination is not to be miffed by their absence, then don't be. Why would you go out of your way to feel hurt??? All your precious little child needs is their parents (yes, even on their 1st birthday), the rest of it (whilst nice for you, the parents) really isn't a big deal.
