DS is getting gromits in both ears this Thurs, what can I expect afterwards?

Hi everyone. DS is getting gromits put into both ears this coming Thurs, we saw the specialist today & he booked him in for 3 days away!!! :o

We have a photo session booked for that afternoon (around 5pm) his surgery is currently booked for 7am, do you think he'll be fine?

For those of you who have had it done on their young ones how did they behave in the days/weeks following? Do they just go on with life? How long until they started talking? DS is 22 months old & only says "mamma", he used to have a vocab of about 5 or 6 words but when he was about 12 months old he dropped all words except Mamma.

I know this will prob sound a bit silly since its just small surgery, but I'm a little nervous about DS having surgery. He never stops moving so its a bit scary/sad thinking of his little body laying lifeless on an operating table with all these strangers around him poking & prodding :(

I know ALOT of parents go through much harder things including life saving surgery etc on their children, so its silly I'm getting a bit sad & worried... but I cant help it.

:hug: :hug: it doesnt matter how big or small an opperation knowing your baby is having surgery is so hard.
DS had his first set in at 11months so I cant help with the speach but he had started walking before but stopped after his op because it affects their balance. DS laughed alot when he made loud noises I think because he was hearing them properly for the first time. DS was a bit tired but fine after his op.
could you change the day of the photo shoot just incase??
Oh and no water in the ears now...i used an earband with DS to hold his ear plugs in like a head band thingy?

Doesn't matter how "small" your son's surgery is - it's always hard when it's yours and when something is happening. As a nurse, I can handle whatever happens to my patients and their families. If they're in pain, no drama - I can deal with it. If they need more surgery or tests, no drama - I can deal with it. But when it's my own... not so great. I even rang another nurse on Saturday night because I was second guessing how I was doing with my sick DD... I knew in my mind I was doing all the right things and what needed to happen... but because it was MY daughter - I doubted myself. But I was giving her all the answers to my own questions :rofl:. So don't feel bad.

I'd change the photo shoot - it's impossible to predict how anyone will respond to an anesthetic - some are really chucky and some like they've just had an afternoon nap. He might also be really sleepy all day or just not in the mood to "play nice". So if it were me, I'd move the photo shoot.

My sister has had over 30 sets of grommets since birth. I think she was about 3 months old when she got her first set, shes 22 now. Balance would be a problem but I dont know what else, I never paid attention :$

I'm not sure about the grommets alone, DD had her tonsils & adenoids out as well, so was in pain. From what I saw of the little boy who only had grommets, he was great!
As MG said, its the reaction to the anaesthetic I'd be more worried about. That little boy was fine, another was groggy, but ok also. DD wasn't so great.
She woke up instantly & was very jittery & antsy, as well as sleepy most of the afternoon. She couldn't sit still, but needed sleep iykwim. I would at least wait til the next day for the photo's. He could be back to his normal self, but he might not be. You can't really tell.
:hug: It is scary, no matter whats happening. I'll be thinking of you. I think I cried the whole time DD was in the theatre. Actually I stopped for about 5 minutes, then started again when I heard her come out, coz she came out crying & I had to wait to go in to her.

DD2 has her done 2 weeks ago, she woke pretty agitated form the anesethetic but after an hour or so was ok, didnt sleep any more than normal that say, we gave her panadol that night, id cancel the photo shoot though, i'll find the thread i started too..
