Help me understand tax how much?

I think this is in the wrong place.

Just wondering how much tax your suppose to pay? Just say I earned $40000 and paid $5000 tax is that enough? Thats before the tax rebate. I have been trying to find a chart that says how many cents in the dollar you pay to see if I should expect a return or a bill. From what I have earnt I don't think I have paided enough tax and trying to work it out before tax time.

The ATO website has a calculator you can work out your approximate refund or debt. You will need to know things like if you need to pay the medicare levy and o forth.

I'ts a good idea to check. I had an employer that didn't take enough tax out and I ended up with a big debt and had to go to court! It was ok in the end, we just made an arrangement to pay it back.
