Under Active Thyroid in Pregnancy - Thyroxin

Hi all,

Yesterday at 13wks 4days, I was informed that I need to start taking Thyroxin due to my thyroid showing as underactive. He said although the results were showing as normal if I wasnt pregnant, in pregnancy it is underactive.
So now my question is? Is it too late to be taking it, as bubs is already 13wks 4days in gestation? I know I shouldnt have but of course I googled, and now I am worried it may not have been picked up in time.

Has anyone been this far along in there pregnancy or further and toldf they needf to take medfication fdor their thyroid and bubs still turned out ok?

The Dr's didnt seem too concerned yesterday. I have been told I will also need to be on this long term (thyroxin) after bubs is born.

I am not too sure about harming the baby, I am not sure that it would as it is only replacing a hormone that you are obviously producing some of just not enough because you are pregnant. I was always under the impression that the baby takes what it needs first and then you get the left overs, so if you are producing some hormones then the baby would be getting what they need and you get the left overs. So you have probably been feeling tired etc. Try not to worry talk to your dr about it hopefully he will set your mind at ease. i take oroxine as i have hashimoto's disease. If you have any other questions just ask.

Thanks Nikki, my concern isnt the thyroxine hurting bub, but not taking it early enough due to bub already being close to 14wks. I will be asking the DR's at my next appt in 2wks, yet I am hoping someone has experienced this and all has turned out ok with bub. Thanks again hugs

I know that is what you meant sorry i must of written it funny LOL!! I don't think that is would of hurt bubs by you not having enough hormones in your body. Like i said up the top its much like say your iron was low bubs takes what they need first and you are left with the left overs which sometimes is not enough and in your case makes your levels low for pregnancy. I was about 6 weeks when had to start taking thyroxine, I have Hashimotos like Love My Kids - it was at the point I discovered I was pregnant that I was diagnosed and my levels were really bad (even for a non-pregnant person) so I wasn't as far along as you, and I did worry a bit about whether had, had any affect on bubs - but she turned out fine. I would suspect that as your levels are not that low if they are in the normal range for someone who isn't pregnant that all should be fine. The doctor I saw said mine probably looked so bad because the baby was getting all the hormone I was producing, because I had been tested a few months previously and although levels were a little low they were in the normal range.

I had pregnancy related hypothyroidism, that despite all the classic symptoms didn't get picked up until after 34weeks. DS was just fine.
FWIW I didn't have Hashimotos and could stop the thyroxin a few months after he was born.

do you know what your results were?
Overly low T4 in pregnancy can affect fetal development. Very high TSH can affect their thyroid development, but only from aruond 2nd trimester as their thyroid hasn't formed before that.
In my first pregnancy I had ery low T4 at the start due to high estrogen levels after hyperstimulating (I had my thyroid removed a few years back and am on complete replacement) and high TSH, but DS developed fine anyway.
This pregnancy I've only just, at aournd 16 weeks, had to increase my dose. It may be that you didn't need any extra until this ponit anyway, in which case nothing untoward could have happened. If you're doctor was not worried, and your levels were normal for non-pregnancy, then I would suspect you're only just outside normal anyway, so it's probably nothing to worry about.

Hi, If they are very low in the first tri then it can effect the developement of the fetus, but if they're just a little bit low it shouldn't be much of a concern. I Don't have a thyroid gland (thyroidectomy in 09 due to graves disease) so I have to take thyroxine for the rest of my life. It was found that my levels were too low at about 12 weeks and my endo increased my dose. He said it wasn't too much of an issue though, as like yours they weren't extremely low ITMS. Please don't worry, i think you'll be fine :hug:
