terrible morning. dont have hot drinks near your kids....

one of my worst nightmares happened this morning.... my tea got spilt on DS1... it was v hot and he was scalded. we got him into a cold shower straight away for 20 mins and i called my GP who sent us to the hospital. so awful. the good news is he is 100% fine, it is hardly even red now... and the hospital wasnt worried at all. but all the 'what ifs' are too awful to think about.
I have always worried about this happening - and it did. please do not have hot drinks near your kids AT ALL. it was sitting on the bteakfast table and literally knocked over when i leaned to get a book to read to the kids... it was far out of reach of the kids... but it still happened.

I am so glad that N is ok and I hope you have been able to calm down as well.

My tea always has cold water in the top but that is usually because I am too impatient to wait for it to cool down. But I have been co clumsy of late that I wouldn't be suprised if I knocked over a mug myself.

I have my hot drinks in a travel cup (even when we go to cafes) after DS pulled an entire cappacino over me and him one day when he was about 9 months old. Letting drinks cool a bit and having them in a travel cup if they do grab them it tends to stop them spilling and if I forget about leaving it somewhere the kids can get it (if I have to get up unexpectedly and deal with my other kids, sometimes I don't think about my drink before I go), it doesn't matter as much. I also haven't broken any coffee cups for over a year ;) I have a metal one that I use at home and usually just order take away cardboard one when we are out.

ETA - Another bonus of using a travel cup is that my drinks stay hotter longer so if I don't get to drink it because I have to go and do something in the middle, I don't come back to a cold drink. Love my travel cup ;)

Thanks so much everyone... i think the mummy guilt is prob the worst thing thats still lurking... but it was so awful and made worse as it is something i have often worried would happen. anyway, i hope it stops someone from being in the same situation...

travel cup is a great idea - i have always liked having my tea out of a china cup (yes I am a little pedantic and part english) but what a great tip. will be buying some travel cups tomorrow. thanks.

MP :hug: Glad N is ok. This happened to us one time, DD1 would've been around the same age. I had the tea right at the back of the desk, but she climbed and reached past to get something and somehome managed to tip it towards herself. I was *besided myself*, did the cool water, took her straight up to the drs. When we got there they cross-examined me (dunno why, I was clearly distraught) and then concluded she was perfectly fine (no mark at all). I felt terrible for ages but it's something you eventually learn, you can't protect them from everything, no matter how hard you try.
