We always buy the pre packed little bucket of sliced mushies from coles or wollies!
Should I be considering this as a pre packaged salad???
Would it be better to buy whole mushrooms??
TIA

If you are concerned, then yes, I would buy whole Mushrooms.
This is for a few reason: primarily - they are SO much cheaper!! They are fresher, and from a listeria POV, you can see exactly how dirty they are.
If your mushrooms are dirty and this worries you just rub them with a dry tea towel or rinse them very quickly (stalk down) under the tap.
Don't submerge them or drown them in water - the mushroom will absorb it all and you will get soggy mushrooms when you cook them.
Personally, I never bother unless they are covered in dirt, and never had an issue. But I only buy whole fresh mushrooms. ;)
Yep, will kill most everything :) Very exxy buying precut mushies though, and more waste lol
PMSL I have been over here with Woolies for 4 years and I still call it Safeway!
Before I forget, would it still kill the bacteria if I dont wash them. I dont wash the sliced ones but rub the whole ones?
I only call it woolies to interstate people!! Safeway all the way! :P
Wow i never knew washing your mushies makes them soggy, thanks for the tip :)
I have also wondered that about the listeria risk with the pre packaged safeway ones :)
The problem with the dirt on mushies people have is that they are grown in manure. (Feed on s*** and kept in the dark ;) lol)
So many people don't like it, they even peel the mushrooms!
Though honestly, just brushing it off or using a dry towel will get rid of the dirt, and microscopic bits can actually be good for you too, and personally, I don't think there is much of a risk of bacteria hurting you form the mushroom dirt.
As for the precut ones, I think the tools they are using and the hygeine of those preparing them is the big concern, but Coles/Safeway would be in a world of trouble if thye were found to have issues with that in their prep kitchens - and isn't worth it - they even have auto meat slicers in the delis now so the staff never have to touch the meat to prevent issues like this.
There is a time when you can over think things I think - I wouldn't worry at all.
I eat heaps of mushrooms and just wash them, I never have a problem with them going soggy I just run them under water while I rub the skin. If I skin still feels a little dirty than I will peel the skin from the top.
I haven't lived near a 'safeway' for 11 years and still call woolies safeway sometimes! lol
