DS vocabulary is a bit lacking and id like to do all i can to help him increase it. We read books (although he only really lets us read a line or two before he turns the page) and we talk about what we are doing, looking at etc. Is there anything more i can be doing? He has huge "conversations" with people but he is still using alot of nonsense words and i think at this stage he should be talking more than he is.
I think that he sounds perfectly fine for a 19 month old. My son was saying about 50 words at 18 months, but he also has an older sister that never stops talking which helped. At this age you are doing pretty much all you can, dont rush him, he will start talking in no time and then you will be trying to figure out how to turn him off.
How many words does he have? In the book I have here, by 18 months they "should" have around 3 words that are pretty clear.
I can't remember how many Kelti had at that age, but she's just had a word explosion, so is saying heaps more now - so from 19 months to nearly 2 - its incredible how much they pick up.
Really, there isn't much more you can do - just talk to them and read books, and you're doing a damn fine job!

Mel: I think he would say around 10 words. He doesn't use them on a regular basis though but i know he can say them. I was under the impression that he should be going through a word explosion around now so that has been at the back of my mind a bit. I should stress less hey lol.
He doesn't tend to use any animal sounds etc and cant identify any body parts, i suppose i feel like im not doing enough but i dont feel like i can talk to him all day either lol.
DS1 has just turned 2 and he is only now as in last 2 weeks started saying a few more words. Before that he said mummy, daddy, bub and that was it, now he also says baby, shoes, bye bye, hi, boo boo, bubbles.
We have had 2 sessions with a speech pathologist as pead was concerned re not saying enough at 21 months.
He can point to his nose and eye, doesn't do any animal noises.
Don't stress they all do things at there own pace.
I think at that age kelti would do a cow, dog, cat and thats about it with the noises. She does most of them now - but we have been reading a lot of animal books. I went through the body parts when I was bathing her if that helps...
Oh - and 10 words is GREAT! :D Above the expected amount :D

Maybe he has a special word just for you because you are so beautiful to him - and you just haven't noticed what the word is yet :comfort:
Given that a lot of my friends who have had speech issues have always said "I wish I had have got them checked for speech issues earlier" I would get him checked anyway. It can't hurt and if everything is fine you'll feel better anyway :) Goodluck.
We recently had his 18 month check and the MCN was happy with what stage he was at even though he was doing the bare minimum. I have to keep an eye on it and if im still concerned at 2 i need to go back for another assessment and a referral to a speech path. Its just a matter of working on it till then.:

Doing better than Sam who is all of 9 days younger!
Sam has "woo" or woof - which is used for all small and furry animals (including cats, rabbits and guinea pigs). He also has "twee" for the sounds birds make. In the last week he has started making a brrrrm sound for cars, motorbikes, etc. And only in the last few days has he come up with NO - and my goodness is he using it a lot!
There's other things that he has said - mum, dad, more, something we think was meant to be bird, but he just hasn't continued to use them. Once we discovered that he had a thing for animals we started visiting pet shops (we rent and can't have pets) to expose them to animals, plus lots of animal books, puzzles. Anything we could think of that would get him vocalising! It seems to be working. We have a paed appointment next week and I'm half expecting a referral to speach therapy. I will let you know how we go.

I bought some flash cards with a range of every day pictures and words for my DD1. She had about 6 words at 18 months and could say about two of the words out of 100 cards. At age two, literally within two weeks of her birthday she could say 98 of the words on the cards. I did notice a slight improvement using the cards before age 2 and they definitely helped with increasing her vocabulary after her word explosion. I was the same as you. I wasn't going to worry until after age two as I'd heard so many people on BB say that their kids had a word explosion at age two. My DD gives me running commentary on our day now so she's definitely 'caught up' now. You can get flash cards off eBay and I've seen them at toys r us too. Hope that helps!
I agree he sounds pretty normal to me.
We had an early talker here and although we may have just lucked out, what worked for us was music. DS loves music SOOOOO much. I got him a whole bunch of kids CDs and played them ALOT (durin playtime, car rides and bath time). He started picking up words like crazy from his favourite songs and would try to sing along.
I think he sounds perfectly normal, Ava is 'ahead' in her speach according to out MCHN but i think thats because i could speak under water with concrete in my mouth as DP says... Shes 21mths now and has only just started properly with the animal noises, if we ask her what a duck does etc she will tell us.
At 15mths old she was already putting 4 words together, JACK, CASS GET HERE or JACK CASS SIT DOWN (our dogs) and the MCHN couldn't believe it.
Some of the kids in our MG are 21mths and probably say less than your LO.. i wouldn't worry too much, your doing all the right things, reading, talking.. theres not much more you can do.
One thing i did do with Ava was play lots of music, if the TV was off the radio or CD's were on, she had books of her own she could sit and look at (cardboard so she didn't rip them) and we talked to her flat out, also got her that talking dog that says hand etc, those kinds of toys are great cos they are fun and teach them a lot!
We did and had all that stuff too and DD1 was still a late talker! Just shows how different every kid is huh?! :):
We read DD lots of books, but she learns more word just day to dy by us saying what something is and getting ehr to repeat it, lots of books that have just a picture and the names of the "thing" like the my first words book. We started out with pointing at the iamge and say what the word was, then she would then be able to look at them and in time point at what was each one when we said the name, now we can point at the object and she say the same, we then relate that back to the actualy object she see's everday, like a real ball, door, window, house. We do a lot of finding the object in the picture books as well as reading the story, and the stories we chose we keep the text to a limited amount as she will get bored and want to turn the page. But she is lasting longer now and really enjoying sitting and listening to a whole story.
DD has a really big vocabulary, and seems to have really blossomed in the last few months :)
When DD went thru the stage of not letting us read a book properly we got the books Beema mentioned - and did a similar thing, point at the object and say what it was, mainly we asked her to find an object.
DD def had a word explosion when she got nearer to 2, but she's still not making heaps of sentences unlike others at MG, but she is more advanced in other areas, which I'm sure Lachlan is too. I heard/read somewhere that they work on one area at a time.
Just keep up the running commentary and don't stress!
