Hi i am just about to have egg pick up on sunday. I dont know whether to do a 3 day or 5 day transfer?
My FS it is up to us! There are genetic problems that are to be considered too and we dont have the money to do PGD so i was probably leaning toward 5 day?
My last one was a 3 day transfer which ended up with a BFP but m/c at 6 weeks.
Anyone got any advice or stories would love to hear them.

Blossom73-we also are carriers of a genetic condition with a 1 in 4 chance of our baby being effected we did one round of PGD and our one embryo that was strong enough to be tested (a day 5 HB) was affected the others were grade 3 so could not be tested we could not afford another cycle so went with normal ivf we wanted to go to day 5 but as i had a cyst on my right ovary all my follicles did not get big enough to contain mature eggs so we got 6 and only 3 embryos the scientist said we can push for day 5 but an embryo would be better off in me so on day 3 they rang to say we had an A grade 8 cell perfect embryo that they predicted would make it to day 5 so we decided to TF and i am now pregnant with that embie if i had more eggs i might have gone to day 5 but to be honest in our last cycle our best strongest day 5 hatching blast was affected with our bad gene so to us it really makes no difference on the quality any of ours can be a effected it is just luck of the draw but if your problem is chromosonal then day 5 embryos will usually weed out the bad chromosones.
We have to wait until our 11-12 week cvs results to see if our bub is healthy.

Hi there Blossom73. I've been doing ivf for close to 4 years now on and off & have had both day 3 and day 5 transfers. For me personally I prefer day 5, I have become pregnant twice from blastocyst transfer, I miscarried at 7 weeks but fortunately I am now 10 weeks pregnant. With day 3 I find that some of these embryos don't make it to day 5 and so in the past I've wasted time and money having transfer after transfers with day 3 embryos that might not have even made it any further. It really is a personal choice and one that hopefully you and your hubby and doctor can discuss and make an informed decision together. Whatever you do, don't give up hope.

Hi, I would say a day 5 would have more of a chance, GOOD LUCK!!!!!
Definitely the 5 day blasties. We had 10 eggs fertilise but only 2 made it to blasties and my FS explained that i would have wasted the next 12 months putting in those other 8 embies at 3 days when it is unlikely they would have ever have made it past the first 2 days. I agree with this, but at the time, it seemed like such a waste of eggs!! I think it is a very personal choice, and its a hard call so good luck!.
As a different perspective - I had several transfers of day 5 or 6 blastocysts. Every single one of them ended in miscarriage. Out of 11 blastocysts, only four ever survived being frozen and thawed to be transferred.
My son is the result of transferring a fresh day three embryo. After my FS swore to us that our only hope of conceiving and staying pregnant was with a frozen blast as growing to blast and freezing and thawing would "weed out the ones that won't ever make it". We proved he was wrong. For some, blasts are better. For others, getting that embryo back into your uterus as soon as possible is better. You won't know what's better for you until you try it and find what eventually works (and sadly, it's not guarantee that it will work again next time).
The thing with averages and chances is very general - what works for the majority of women may not work for YOU. If what you've done in the past hasn't been working, it may be a good idea to try something different.

I have in total undergone 6 transfers - 1 fresh and 5 frozen - and these are my results
1st Transfer - Fresh cycle 1 x day 3 embryo transferred - Chemical Pregnancy
2nd Transfer - FET 2 x day 3 embryo's transferred - BFN
3rd Transfer - FET 2 x day 3 embryo's transferred - Ectopic Pregnancy
4th Transfer - FET 2 x day 3 embryo's transferred - BFP resulting in DD now 13 months
5th Transfer - FET 2 x day 5 embryo's transferred - BFN
6th Transfer - FET 2 x day 3 embryo'd transferred - BFP expecting twins in May 2011
So in my case I have had better results with Day 3 embryo's rather than my day 5's (even though I've only had 1 transfer using day 5's). I still have 1 day 3 and 2 day 5's on ice (we got 10 day 3's and 5 day 5's to freeze after epu) and in my mind I don't think my day 5's are strong enough.
In my opinion if you transfer day 3's and they are meant to develop further I would rather have that happen where it is suppose to happen ie: in you to give them the best chance of success, but saying that plenty of people have better results with day 5's and take comfort in the knowledge that they have made it that far.
I know you will in the end choose the best option that you feel comfortable with or like in Ferrals case the decision can sometimes be made for you. Good luck and I hope you get that magical BFP very soon.
