possible allergy - hive-like rash on face...

hi guys...

was going to post this in the punching bag boo hoo room, but thought better to post in here to see if others have seen or experienced this with themselves or their kids...

the background is that DD has, for the last year, reacted quite badly to certain fruits (kiwi, watermelon and grapes). so we minimised the latter two and cut out kiwi (as it would cause immediate reaction just upon touching the skin...so didnt want to risk it).
ANYWAY, on wednesday she was given some passionfruit (which she has had many times before) and by that afternoon had a blotchy rash and sore belly. by that night she was having the runs.
she had a slight fever the next morning so then thought it was gastro and we just rode the waves of poo lol. but by friday my suspicions about the fruit came back and took her to GP. he also believes taht there could be some intolerance involved but we wont know until we see a specialist. so we were told to cut out fruit for the next week and keep her diet very simple and easy to digest to allow her to recover. it seemed to work...
THEN this morning as i was getting her dressed, i noticed that she had some dark red spots on her hands, kept an eye on them, then over the course of half an hour they had spread into big welts all up her arms. i kept an eye and they began to fade again after an hour. but all throughout the day the welts would appear on and off and this time across her feet, up her legs, back, torso and then rather worryingly, across her cheeks and back of the neck.
of course this happened AFTER our GP had closed (ohhh gotta love the timing) so gave nurse on call a call. she said that rash is probably the culmination (and end) of the allergic reaction and we shouldnt be worried (as in no immediate action tonight...just to book an appt to see a dietician etc). then she asked if DD had stomach pain with the rash...just as DD came in doubled over saying her 'stomach hurt'. i said yes...
she told me that she would advise us to bring her in to the GP tonight as the cramps with the rash indicated something more acute.
So hung up and told DH. then she did a HUGE fart (sorry if TMI lol). and seemed heaps better and the rash started to fade (and is no longer there at all).

this is where the punching bag comes into it...DH has refused to take her in tonight (we have an appt for the morning). and took the car so he could go to soccer!!!! i am flabbergasted and totally stressed. although she seems ok i am still worried. but am i overreacting??? the rash has faded the cramps have abated...arghhh! i can't believe he has baulked like this...never has before and has always been supportive of my concerns, especially when it comes to DD...just not this time!!! (he rang MIL after i called the nurse and of course she agrees with him that i am just hysterical :rolleyes:).

i'm not sure what to think about this possible allergy thing...does it sound like the kind of reactions that your kids with allergies get?? i am of course going to get a referral to a specialist tomorrow, but man it is scary seeing that rash!

(oh and sorry this is so long...needed to get alot off my chest too lol).

oh no! what time is your appointment tomorrow? is she still awake?

the appt is first thing (basically when i called they said to come in and we would be seen...i was slightly *hysterical* pg chick lol). she is asleep now and i have been sitting beside her, but all seems fine. so now am just sitting outside her room and listening...and then going in every 5 minutes...i am going insane.

The hives on the torso and limbs is generally what happens when the aleergin is working its way through their system so it does sound like it was something that she ate. Usually by that stage it is uncomfortable but not dangerous so while you may have been overreacting a little to the car incident I think I would have reacted in exactly the same way!

thanks guys for the replies! we took her in first thing first, and thankfully the hives across her face and throat had died down to a simply blotchy rash. her arms and legs are still swollen up, but like you mentioned Nai, the GP said it is now just the body 'purging'. we now have an appt with the allergist for 4 weeks time (need to ensure that she is symptom free and medicine free...she's got a cream and clarantyne for the itching as apparently the rash is going to come and go for about 2-3 weeks). not sure what the allergist can do/recommend as i heard that the test can be a bit of an open book in terms of interpretation, but i guess it is a start...
the only thing we have to avoid for now is the kiwi, passionfruit and watermelon. we can do that! but no fruit for the next week just to give her body some time to settle down. the poor wee poppet is so thin and grey...have a BIG pot of chicken soup bubbling away...

thanks again guys, i feel relieved to know that she is reacting to her allergy (whatever it is!) 'normally' itms. i just hate seeing her in so much pain.

anyway, :crossfingers: that she is symptom free for a wee bit!
