Small Bub at 26wks 4days Gestation - What would they......?

Hi all,

Well on Tuesday we had our last u/s, and they are concerned that bub is too small, atm weighing at the 6th percentile and bubs AC is measuring less than the 5th percentile which appears to be dropping compared to last u/s 4wks ago. Bubs HC is at the 50th percentile.

They are going to keep doing the growth scans, but have told me that they would like to get bub as close as possible to 35-36wks as they can, but it will depend on how the next u/s goes or two.

Now my question is, what will they be looking for to make their decision as how early they want bub delivered? Will it be a based on a number of factors at the scan such as the placenta and blood flow, bubs size etc, or if the placenta and blood flow are still ok, and bub is still lagging only. I hope that makes sense.

My next u/s isnt for another 3wks, but would like to have a bit of an idea on what they will be looking at to make they decision. I guess I should mention as well that I am ANA positive, and taking aspirin. With this pgcy have been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid, so have been placed on thyroxine, and have been recently diagnosed with having GD, atm trying to control by diet alone.

Now I have read somewhere that having thyroid probs can cause IUGR is this correct?
Also I have been told by the Drs that having GD to go either way, either a very small bub or a very large bub. Yet I also know that my bubs start off smaller due to my ANA, so this could also be a factor. I have had two previous small bubs. My first born was 2.5kgs born at 40wks, and my little V (previous pgcy) was born at 38wks at 2.38kg.

So what due you think? If you have been through anything similar what did they look for and how was your bub when delivered?

I had to have a scan at 23 weeks and the hosp is worried about my bub too. They say bub is at the 5th percentile. For my pregnancy it could be linked to the Gastroschisis and Oligohydramnios.

But, sorry I can't help. But any answers to your questions would help me too!!

I'll have another scan in 2 weeks, by then I'll be 26 weeks.
I'm hoping that the Oligohydramios (low amniotic fluid) has corrected itself or at least got better.
Time will tell.
Hopefully bub's has put on a bit of weight too.
When is your next scan??

I have everything crossed for you hun, I hope you have a huge improvement in 2wks time. It is a waiting game. My next scan is in just under 3wks time.

My DD1 was a small baby, I had fortnightly scans to watch her weight, blood flow through the cord and fluid. I also have and underactive thyroid.

At 28 weeks my doctors were going to deliver my DD as she was 'so small' everything else was ok to carry on except her size, I was at the hospital all day and demanded another u/s to confirm and I was lucky to have a fantastic ob who confirmed she was ok and I could carry on under close watch. My DD was born at 38+2 weeks weighing 2.987, bigger than they predicted.

My precious girl was so close to being delivered at such a tender age only to be born a healthy size, this was based only on her size although they were watching other factors. They determind that she was 'so small she wouldn't survive in my tummy'.

This may not answer your question but I thought I would share my experience anyway.

I thought I would also share, my DD1's measurements throughout my pregnancy were weeks behind, she was born at 38+2 weighing 2.987. My DD2 was a few days behind with her growth, she was born at 37+6 weighing 2.900.

DaintreeDream - Thankyou for your reply, Im so glad all turned out good for you after having them want to bring your little girl into the world so young. She was a very healthy weight when she was delivered thats great. Im glad they let you get as far as you did. I have already had two small bubs so I am worried about the size of this little one, and I know that it is only an estimate that they give, but as for little V they told me she was small at about 37wks and est weight was about 2.4kg approx for a 32wk bub, we had another u/s the following week and they said she weighed 2.9kg and she was delivered a few days later, weighing only 2.38kg, so the second u/s was out. I worry if they deliver this one too early and he/she is too little, how would the bub cope. I also dont wont to risk bubs life either. I am so all over the place atm, its ridiculous.
I will speak to V's pead at the end of the month and see what he thinks too, as more than likely he will be the one coming in and checking on bubs when he/she arrives, and he also know alot of the history with V. He mentioned to me last time that I should mention that I have had 2 small bubs born at term before, which I have on several occassions so they can take it into consideration, but I have to say I am at a point to which I dont know on which way to turn. What if this bub is actually suffering, (which I also worried V was) and we do nothing, or if the bub is just a small bub and all is ok but they want him/her out too early, and that wasnt the right decision. IYKWIM.
Im worried about how the GD is affecting bub even when born, Im worried that all that has reared up this time, along with the GD, thyroid has caused bub to be small. I also worry like I did last time with V that the aspirin when stopped didnt do her any favors, and maybe stopped working for her, which at the beggining this time they were considering clexane due to V's BW. So with everything put together, I do worry about this bub. Just my stupid body has played up quite abit this time unfortunately, so feeling like a bit of a failure.
Anyway, sorry for the ramblings, just trying to get things off my chest too, lol. Yet I am honestly so glad all turned out for you, and it does give me hope this time, yet giving V's size, it still sits there in my mind. I just dont want this bub to go through what V has. I guess time will tell. I just hope I make the right decision, if I am faced with it.
