So DD has pubic hair :cry:
I shed a few tears cos my baby is growing up ... wont be long now b4 AF arrives I am sure!
Tonight we had a chat about periods, boys and girls hormones etc. She seemed SO full of questions and wasnt embarrassed to ask :) (Proud mama moment!)
I would like to find a book for her to read about what she will go through, what to expect etc - hopefully something recent not too old iykwim?

That's great that she feels comfortable asking questions without getting embarrassed, shows you have a lovely relationship. What a grown up moment.

Do they do sex education at school? I know DS comes home with a lot of information.

Being a christian school i am not too sure what they learn. I plan on asking dd's teacher when they return to school. Also being in yr 3 i dont think they even talk about it yet
Yep, grade 3 is young, they don't start until grade 5 at our school. Good she is taking it well though.

DP and I went to 2 book stores today to find some books. Some of them were a little toooooooo much info!!! There was even one about masturbating!!! :o Yeah, so NOT going to let an 8 year old ready that one! Geez! We even went to our local biblical store and ALOT of their books had lots of sex and boy talk. Something I am not prepared to give our 8yo!
We did manage to find 2 books tho, and DD and i were reading one together tonight.
I am so happy that I have that relationship with DD where she is not embarrassed to ask me anything. I actually had a bit of a giggle last night when DP was embarrassed about me explaining the difference between girls & boys and DD says 'What? I AM becoming a woman!' :lol: .... too cute!

Year 5 (10) seems a bit late to be giving sex ed, i see some very physically mature 8 year olds.
i remember my mum telling me that when she started menstruating, she thought she was dying of cancer, as no-one had told her about becoming a woman, so she didn't know what to expect. I hope my DD knows about periods etc before they happen, so she doesn't experience becoming a woman, as a traumatic thing.
i'm not worried about my child learning about masturbation, i think babies touch themselves from a very young age.
i'm quite unsure about how to school my DD with regard to sex ed. I'm teaching her the anatomical names, teaching her protective behaviours (we read the storybook called "everyone's got a bottom" which has great protective messages about keeping safe. I want to keep her safe, but i don't want to scare her. Not sure how to do it. Many gray areas. She is so trusting of adults, i don't want to make her scared of all adults. How do you teach a little kid to be "street smart"? Most child abuse happens thru people known to the child, not strangers. Stranger danger seems so easy to teach, but i am all lost, thinking of how to teach my child to be safe around trusted people in her life. It was an uncle, and a nextdoor neighbour, that touched me in bad ways, as a kid. I find it hard to trust people with my child. They are so vulnerable.
With my DD re: Being touched I always tell her, her private parts is something NO ONE can touch, and if anyone ever does, she is to tell us straight away. I also tell her to tell me if anyone touches her in an way the SHE feels uncomfortable.
Re - Masturbation - I am not prepared to let my 8yo know what masturbation is - why does she need to know that? She doesnt FYI DD has never touched/played wit herself like that.

Our school has Sex Education Counsellors come to the school and educate all the children depending on their ages (if the parents are ok with it, it's after school and the parents go with the kids). It's all age appropriate to each group and depending on the parent too. I think Grade 3 is perfectly fine to start to learn some things. My DD is fine and she knows quite a lot and has asked me lots of questions. Talk to your local Family Planning Centre as well as Relationships Australia. There is always new education material available and they would be best to know.
